Okay, so we put Farrah in the pool... for the first time Friday. Well, she walked right off the edge of the deck into the pool and sank like a rock! I thought all dogs could swim? The words "Doggie paddle" come to mind. Can your Yorkie swim? Did she/he learn to swim in time? What's your story? |
Jada can swim and I haven't put Bogie in a pool yet, one of my brothers dogs (a doberman) fell in the pool when he was about 7months old. He sank like a rock and hates the water. Luckily my sister-in-law and some of the other girls she works with were all there. They are vet techs and were swimming at the home of the vet they work for. My sister in law was a life guard when she was younger too so she had to rescue Jake. I thought all dogs could swim too, but our vet said not all dogs do. |
The first time i took Pasquale to the water...i held him over the water..and his feet were going even before he hit the water lol. He started swimming immediately. Squale enjoys the ocean more than the pool cause i think he likes that his feet can touch the bottom, unlike in the pool. |
Wow, I thought they would instinctively swim! That must have scared you, and Farrah!! |
Tucker first swim was accidently jumping off the boat ( thank god for life jackets). So ever since he loves it try getting her in a life jacket to get a hang of it. |
Im Sorry To Hear About That. My Couture, is "13" months old. and this past monday, i put her in the pool for the first time.. it was so funny because. she was like a race horse. she was going around the pool like she was in the water everyday. But Good Luck!! |

Ziva started swimming every day when it got too hot for walks, she really needs the exercise to keep her out of trouble! Two weeks ago,we thought we would start out slow and hold her and let her doggie paddle around but she wiggled loose and just went for it! she can ride a foam board- great balance. This morning she jumped off it and started swimming!. We taught her to swim to the steps automatically so if she fell in she can get to someplace she can stand up (she can't get out herself). Our pool is childproofed so she doesn't have access to it) She only swims for a few minutes (she is 6lbs and a little over a year old) Then I have to wash her off and warm her up. |
Callie can swim but I slowly set her in the water the first time to make sure and she was already doing the swimming motions before I had her in the water it actually looked kinda funny :) |
Cody walked off the dock next to our boat. Luckily he had a harness on and I was holding the leash. He did get wet but we didn't get a chance to see if he would sink or what he would do after falling in. It's like he though he could walk on air! After that we took him to beach and in deeper water let him swim between me and my husband. He did a great doggy paddle. Later in the day we put his life jacket on and he did great too. He still carelessly walks too close to the edge of the dock but we keep a harness and leash on him. |
Gatsby can swim but he hates it if he feet cant touch the bottom. we had small stream and pond that was swim safe when we lived the next city over and we let dogs swim with leaches on. my mothers pug can swim but my mom is afraid to put her in deeper water because she is afraid she will get tired to fast and not be able to hold up all of her muscle and drown. |
Betty Boop took her first swim this month, too. I had a life jacket on her and put her on a raft. She really liked that. I have pictures in my album of her. The life jacket makes her cough so I took it off of her and held her over the water and her feet began swimming before they hit the water!! Pretty funny looking! She likes the water but also likes it when she can swim to the steps to get out! Then she runs around like a little banshee and comes back to the steps and jumps on the raft, that is waiting for her, and swims some more. However, she came to the edge of the pool and jumped in by herself. She sank like a rock!! I was nearby and rescued her. It was a real confidence crusher for her! She hasn't done that since. I think that made her a little leary of getting into the water. She didn't know about water at the time, but learned quickly. |
awe poor little thing it must of freaked you both out. I also thought all dogs knew how to swim. |
Lola is a great swimmer! She swims all around our 2 foot deep pool with no problems! Zach's first time he kind of stood up and didn't really know what to do. I'm sure if it was deeper he would of sunk to the bottom. We just held him in a laying position and he just started to paddle away! Now he is getting better with every time he goes in! We are going to go to the beach some time soon when we have a nice weekend that I'm not working. I want to get them two life jackets too because my FIL has a boat. |
My 2 can swim, my daughter's 2 cavaliers can swim, my other daughter's Bernese can swim but my grand daughter's french bulldog sinks like a rock |
Swimming Miss Bella can swim she love the pool ONLY when we are out there and a certain toy goes in. she dives in then on other hand Jack does know how to swim he would rather play in HIS baby pool. or the water sprinklers. :) Cheryl |
We took Bama swimming for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Our plan was to hold on to her and see how she liked it and if she could stay up. She walked onto the deck and saw the kids in the pool, ran and jumped right in!! (I don't think she realized there was water in there) Scared me! My bf jumped in after her but she was aleady at the top swimming around. We ended up getting her a kiddie pool to play in and get used to the water for playing and not just bath time. |

Luckily my husband ( a former ocean lifeguard) was waiting for her. So she sank a bit and then he lifted her up. She didn't seem too scared. Then he held her over the water and her feet began to "doggie paddle" so he lowered her into the water again, but she couldn't hold her own. So she has been in with my husband twice more since and doesn't bother to try to doggie paddle. He just carries her around. I have a river raft (where there is mesh on the bottom) I put her in there and she liked it and left her "mark". That's my Farrah...the marker. The life jackets are on the boat, so I think I will buy another set so I never forget them home or on the boat. Thanks for sharing all your stories. It is scary sometimes when you are the caretaker of these precious little souls. |
We also put Rusty in the pool with us for the first time this weekend...and not only is he not a good swimmer he HATED the pool. He immediately went for the side of the pool to get out!! I am hoping he will start to like it as we try this again :) |
Like a rock I have two yorkies, an 18 month old and a 5 month old. I haven't tried my youngest, but my oldest hates it. She has fallen in a handful of times and sinks like a rock too. She has gotten better, but she doesn't know which way to swim out and I don't think she will make it if she falls in without me watching. She'll tire too quickly. I've purchased a life jacket so I can teach her which way to swim to get out. |
Keoki fell in the pool and very calmly swam- it was hilarious- I was the one who was freaked out- he just got out of the water and shook off but now he goes no where near the pools edge. |
