Is it too much for a pup? I was wondering if training a pup to potty on a pad AND outside? I am bringing home my little guy in a month but I don't want to confuse him. I want to make him feel comfy and safe before I do anything. I'd prefer if he goes on the pad but is it hard to train him to also go in the grass. Should I do one more than the other? *if there is a previous thread about this, feel free to delete.. And show me where that thread is located. :D |
I'm so happy for you that you are going to have a pup soon -- congratulations! :) My boys are both pad and outdoor trained. No problems. Focus on the pad training, and the outdoor part will come naturally. Be sure to praise, praise, praise for correct potties -- pad or outdoors. Maximo took a little while to figure out that it was okay to potty outside on our walks or outings. He is still excellent about discerning when and where it is okay to potty. For instance, he know stores and garden centers are not places to do his business. |
My vet thinks it is too confusing; but there are others (as above) who were successful at training both. I'm still working on the outside potty! |
thank you.. He's looks like a sweet little guy.. I really hope my boyfriend will open up to him. I'm sure a little puppy face will make him smile. :) I guess i'll just enforce the potty pad then and try the outside later. :) |
I have had wonderful success training my little girl with potty pads and going outside. It has been perfect for bad weather and and awesome that if she wakes in the night she goes back to the office where her potty tray/pad are, goes potty, comes back to bed and never wakes me up. I did have a trainer tell me how horrible potty pads are and that she would be going all over the house and she was so very wrong. My pup will be 3 in July and doesn't have accidents and knows exactly where she is supposed to go potty. I don't know if boy dogs are different though in their potty training. I'm sure you are so excited to get your little boy. Don't forget to post pics when you get him! |
My pup is six months old and we're trying to pad train him and train him to go outside. He figured out that we humans use the bathroom and that he was going to potty there too. It's great except when he doesn't manage to get in there with one of us before we close the door so he has little accidents every now and then. We're still working on going outside. He'll pee outside but he won't poop. |

Just don't take your pup out until he has full immunity. You don't want to risk getting him/her sick. Good luck and Congrats! |
Mine are all trained to use potty pads inside at night and w hen we're gone and to go outside with a doggie door when we're home. I don't think it confuses them at all because I never find mistakes to clean up so I know they are trained. If I had it to do again though I would change one thing. At first I used the disposable pads and they tore them up so I went to the washable pads and it was fine...until they started mistaking my rugs as potty pads because they felt like the soft material of the washable pads. Later I found the tray that holds the disposable pads in place so I got one and started using disposable pads again and things are o.k. now. If I had it to do again I would have never started using washable pads. |
My boy is 7 months old and I am still trying to train him outside. He's a lot harder than my girl was. His trainer is absolutely against pads, but I think the best is what works for you. Everyone's needs are different. |
I do both, I focused more on him going outside at first, and then starting putting potty pads in his "room" which is the kitchen while I am away. When I'm not at home he goes on the pad if he needs to, I seldom if ever find poo in there (guess I'm not gone long enough for him to need to do both). He's six months old and the last accident he had was in my bf's place, but I didnt have any piddle pads for him there...So I do believe that it is entirely possible to do both, just focus more on the one that you want him to do while you are at home and able to provide for him, and use the other as a back up plan for when you can't give him the other. |
thank you for all the advice.. I do agree about his immunity so i'll train him with the potty pads until he gets his shots. Lexi was trained with that plastic square around the pad. But then she got used to just the pad. I think I could just borrow that plastic thing for him. Thanks again everyone! :-) i'm so excited to be able to love and teach my Bailey-to-be! |
Sophie Kate will go on a pad or outside, she is trained to the "go potty" command which I always use outside and when inside she goes on a the pad with no command but I learned I can not move the pad around it has to be in a spot where she is used to it being. |

I was hoping that would be best to teach him.. Any other ideas?? :D |
I tried the pads and it didn't work that well; Merlin got confused with the carpet. Now we are trying him only to go outside which works quite well. Only when it is pouring, the mosquitos are eating me alive while he circles to find the best position or when I think of the winter I think it would be great if he could get used to the pads after all. On the other side he is still young, he will learn. I'm sure you can't wait to get your baby. |

I tried and tried and tried to get my little girl, Apple, to use pads, and it just wouldn't work...About 7 or 8 months old, I gave up, and started w/the outside, and she was housebroken in about 2 weeks! Even if it's raining (not too hard), she'll go outside real quick, and come back in...My boy, Buzz, came "almost" pad trained, and for a while, he would go on both, and I loved it...Now he won't go on pads, at all......I'd love for them to do both, but sometimes they decide what's best for them lol...On the upside, those durn pads get really expensive, so if you have the opportunity to outdoor train, it's definitely more cost effective...Congratulation on the upcoming baby...ewwwwwwwwww so exciting! |

If I'm not home and he has to go, I'd be so happy if he didn't need to wait for me, you know? ;) |
My little yorkie is pad trained and also working on outdoor potty training. She is finally understanding why we go outside every few hours, is for potty time.... then she can run around and play. Princess is taking much longer to train than my pomeranian puppy (Ty). He was fully trained before he was 4 months old. Hoping Princess will be fully trained for potty outside soon. I do want her to do both, since she hates wet grass. I can only imagine what she will be like when we have snow. |
*sigh* Lexi was sooo great at the potty training.. In any house, if we laid the pad down, she'll potty on it.. My boyfriend would always take a roadtrip to see his parents and she used the grass with no problem.. Then again she had 8 years of potty time.. I should ask my bf for tips too.. I think he did a fantastic job with our Lexi.. |
my Pixie does both. I got Pixie when she was 8 weeks (yes I know too young, but I did not know that) It was in November when I brought her home and cold in CT so we pad trained her all winter. When spring came I started taking her out when I took Daisy out. Pixie will pee outside when I say go pee pee and I think that is the key to have a word that they can learn. She pees on the pad as well. As far as poo she prefers the pad but if we are on our walk she will poo right on the walking trail:eek: |

Yeah they don't like me now. |
I'm trying to train Charlie with both the pads and going outside. In the last 4 or 5 days, he's been doing great with going outside but not as good with the pads. Sometimes he'll pee on the pad but he'll never poop. I made several mistakes along the way, though. The first was I didn't crate him. It felt cruel to me but now that I have read and learned more, I realize that would have been the best route to go. I also put down a lot of the pads thinking the more accessible they were to him, the better. I think, in hindsight, it was a bad idea. He'd coming along pretty well now, though. With the kids out of school, my daughter is doing a great job of trainig all sorts of things. |
bella is both.. when we are home, she goes outside so we always keep the door open. And i also keep the pee pads when we are not home because i dont think that she can hold it for long time. Even that some people say yes.. i just find it bad if she has to hold it when im not home. BELLa goes to the pads when im not home or it is raining.. (in washington there is always rain) so hopefully your puppy will go both.. pads are always handy and easy to keep your dog inside! Plus you dont feel guilty to leave your house for long hours! |
Our two little ones are trained on both, but I agree to concentrate on the pads first. Outside will come naturally! Best of luck! |
