Correction for tiny Yorkie I have a 9 months old 4lb female Yorkie. I have watched and followed Cesare Millan Dog Whisperer's advice for obedience and training my Yorkie. I am finding it difficult to figure how to give a stronger correction to her. Normally I try to use either the clapping of the hands or a strong 'shhhhht' sound to give a correction when she is doing something I don't want her to do. As she is becoming a 'teenager' this type of verbal correction is not as efficient anymore. I walk her with a "Buddy Belt" harness because of the Yorkie's soft neck and would like some advice as to how to give a proper correction to her. Would a tug on the Buddy Belt be as efficient as a neck collar? I don't want to correct her using a neck collar due to the collapsing trachea issue in Yorkies. Any advise is highly appreciated. |
I think if you are needing a stronger correction, then you might be correcting too much. Maybe try to use some positive reinforcement instead? Focus on the positive and ignore negative? I'm not sure what your issues are though so not sure if I'm giving you good advice.... |
I love Cesar! But I have found that his methods don't always work for my young yorkie. She is almost a year old and less than 4 lbs . . so harsh corrections are out. But I have the same question because how DO you correct? I trained my Westie with a choke collar (per the trainer) and he is a perfect walker. We now use a harness. I could never use those corrections on Lucy; she is too fragile. Ringo is a very sturdy 15 lb Westie. Mainly we go with positive reinforcement. I use coins in a can when she barks too much (she hates the coins in a can). That's all I've come up with so far! |
i walk Morgan on a harness, she is almost 5lbs, and i use the Cesar "shht" sound. While walking if she does something I do not want her to do I "shht" her and give her a tiny pop/tug on the leash to get her attention. I'm talking really tiny tug because if you give a pop like you would for a bigger dog you'll hoist your yorkie off the ground. Usually I say "shht" and tug at the same time, they tell her "let's go" or "come on" to get her moving with me again. |
