Red Legged Yorkie 1 Attachment(s) Dany's getting her first professional groom on Saturday and I need to give the groomer a picture of the puppy cut I want Dany to have. She is not the typical yorkie, I believe she is a "red legged" yorkie - her tan is more of a red, her back is completely black (she's 7 yrs. old), her hair is thick, her ears don't grow hair, and her hair does not grow very long (we've had her since February and I'd say her hair is now about 2-3 inches long, doesn't seem to have grown as much in the last month). So, does anyone have a picture of their red legged yorkie that has a puppy cut that they wouldn't mind sharing (I will be printing it out to bring to groomer). Her pic is below. Thanks! 5 months isn't very long for a yorkie to grow hair. My Lola was completely shaved like a rat last summer from her previous owners in July. Her hair has grown and is only 3 maybe 4 inches long. |
She wasn't completely shaved down when we adopted her. Her coat is pretty bushy right now and she overheats quickly in the summer weather, even though her hair isn't as long as Addie's. She doesn't have the silky coat the "usual" yorkie has, she doesn't conform to the breed standard. Since her coat is a different texture, I was wondering if anyone else out there with a red legged yorkie (which I'm pretty sure she is) has pictures that I can use to show the groomer a nice shorter cut for the summer. |
Im so sorry to go off topic here but im just curious as to what a red legged yorkie is Ive never heard of it before. |

Red Legged Yorkies are those Yorkies with "wiry" hair that never grows very long. Though, I have seen different degrees of length in these types of coats. Some can grow a coat of about 6 inches, others 2 inches and then everywhere in between. Usually, the hair on the face of a red legged Yorkie grows longer than the hair on his body. The red legs tend to be very dark in color, with deep, rich tans that can appear almost reddish in natural light. Their black is a true black that rarely turns bluish. I have heard that old-time breeders used red legged Yorkies to add color and proper coat texture back in to their lines. |
My Moka is exactly like you describe, and I consider her a red leg too. I don't have any pictures of a hair cut though, because she has never had one. But I do have an album of her. Their type of coat doesn't usually mat, at least Moka's never mats. Her hair is extremely brittle and breaks off easy, but is otherwise pretty thick. I just trim off the longer whispy hairs to keep it even looking which helps to make it look fuller still. She doesn't spend much time out doors when it is hot, and I have never noticed her being overly hot without a hair cut. I recently (2-3 months ago) switched her food to Wellness, and am actually starting to see some regrowth of hair on her ears, and her coat has a softer feel to it, so I am excited about that. Your baby is precious. |
1 Attachment(s) Here is a better body shot that shows how I keep her trimmed up. Not really what I would call a puppy cut and probably doesn't really help you any. She is really short over her back thigh area because she used to nibble it off due to allergies, but she has stopped doing that with the change up in food. |
my dog was a red leg yorkie, his hair didnt really grow at all on his feet between his eyes, nose or ears. he needed less baths than my other yorkie, but his hair was not wirey at all it was soft but grew much slower than my other dogs. i know this might sound odd but i am a knitter, i saved his hair ever time he got a cut and made a scarf with it, people think its cashmere it is so soft. I have pics of him if you pmme i can email you some. |
Cha Cha: Thanks! Your yorkie is such a cutie pie! Fifeandshaffer: I'll PM you soon. Thanks! |
