Robitussin Is everyone sick of my questions yet? Does anyone know what KIND of Robitussin to give a 2 pound yorkie pup and what the DOSAGE would be? I don't know if I should use adult Robitussin DM or children's Robitussin. I went to the vet and the receptionist told me to use regular Robitussin (whatever that is) and she gave me a syringe that she marked. She drew a line to where I should measure the Robitussin. I am double checking on the dosage on this board....because I asked the receptionist how much that line was marked to and she told me that the whole syringe held 1 tsp and she said that 1 tsp=1 CC. She said that the mark was at 1/4 tsp but when I came home I realized the syringe held more than 1 tsp. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
I don't know what to use for a 2 pounder but I give my 7pound yorkie 1/2cc of children Robitussin. Does anyone know what KIND of Robitussin to give a 2 pound yorkie pup and what the DOSAGE would be? My pup has a cough and on Saturday his vet told me to give him Children's Benadryl in a quarter of the recommended dosage for a two year old. I haven't used any on him yet, but I just thought I'd share. |
I use an off brand (Walmart) childrens cold & decongestant on Gracie, she's 1 lb 4 oz. and I give her a 1/4 tsp. |
Our vet told us 1/4 teaspoon of Robitussin DM for our girls that are 1.5 and 2 lbs. They hated it though! If it's for kennel cough, try a tsp of honey to sooth the cough. Also get a humidifier and keep it near them. Also, you can tap on their lungs to loosen them up. Do it gently with your hand cupped around their front torso. It should sound like a hollow thump if you are doing it correctly. Do it on both sides each time. |
i was told to use the robitussin pediatric cough and cold... and we used about a quarter of a teaspoon |
Thanks for all the replies. He has a strange cough right when he wakes up every morning. It's pretty bad...he just walks around and coughs uncontrollably for about a minute and then he's fine. He's been like this for a month. The vet said that he doesn't have any congestion and she thinks it's post nasal drip. She also mentioned the trachea rings not being formed right on the smaller breeds. I hope this isn't the start of a collapsed trachea. I pray it's just allergies and he outgrows this. I will go with the 1/4 tsp. I'm just wondering if there is something better than Robitussen that I could use for the post nasal drip. |
StewiesMom.... How much does your puppy weigh? Thanks! |
[Quote] was marked to and she told me that the whole syringe held 1 tsp and she said that 1 tsp=1 CC. She said that the mark was at 1/4 tsp but when I came home I realized the syringe held more than 1 tsp.[Quote] I don't know what the receptionist gave you as a syringe but 1 teaspoon is "5" cc's. There are 5cc syringes and 1cc syringes. I am a nurse so I am sure about this. 1/4 of 5cc's would be 1.25cc's. 1/4 of a 1cc syringe would be 0.25cc's so that is a big difference in dosage and whether you are talking about adult or childrens formula. |
Thanks KK's Mom...that's why I was asking her. The numbers weren't adding up. |
Be Careful! Ringo....I am a nurse too......be sure that you are using a 1 cc syringe.....otherwise you can overdose these little guys......1/4 tsp of childrens Robitussin should then be safe. Max and Maggie's mom |
I just checked this syringe and it says ML not CCs....so the receptionist was really confused. It has 2 sides. On one said it has whole numbers and on the ML side it has .1 through 1.0. She has the magic marker marked at 3 on the whole number side. I am guessing the doctor told her to mark it there, but I'm definitely going to go with the 1/4 tsp like everyone is saying. I actually had rather use benadryl because I honestly think he has some sort of allergy. Does anyone know how much benadryl I should give a 2 pounder. Now my next step is to find out what's causing this allergy. I'd rather cure the problem than mask it. The reason that I'm going to give the benadryl is because I don't think this coughing is good for a pup with a developing trachea. Any ideas? |
A Toy caused my pup's cough My Gracie was coughing and it ended up being the rawhide bones she was chewing on, they were getting caught in her throat and she was coughing to get the pieces out. Try changing toys and see if that is the problem for the cough. Our vet had us take away all of her toys and only introduce them back one a day untill she started coughing again. She started coughing on the second day. We changed to a diffrent brand of bones and she has not coughed since. |
Claire I was told that rawhide bones are not good for Yorkies. Im glad that Gracie is better now. Ringo I hope that Benadryl works for your Yorkie. To be safe contact your vet and ask if Benadryl is best and how much to give your pup. Good luck. |
I actually sat in the bathroom with the shower running so the steam would get into my Baby Tango. He was very congested and the medicine wasn't really working. Is your dog teething? This can sometimes affect their sinsus. I use baby or children medicines on my BOYS. |

Hope it helps. I know it can be confusing. Sounds like you do have a 1cc syringe. Mary Jo |

I'm so glad I found this thread! Pita has the same cough, it starts like she's choking and ends with a little sneeze and she usually swallows some mucous. She has good days and bad. I gave her Robitussin DM this morning but now I realize it was ADULT I gave her 1 cc, do you think this is OK? |
I think Pita will be fine. Just keep an eye on her and make sure she has plenty of water available if she need it. |
