Cats and puppy I have 2 cats that are major hunters (one has a rabbit pinned on my deck right now!!!) Do cats ever go after puppies? I will be bringing a new puppy home soon and I'm a little worried. |
i'd be worried if the puppy is particularly small. how old is the puppy going to be and how much does it weigh? i'd make sure that they are never alone together just in case until they are all used to each other. |
Welcome to YT. That is a great question. We had wild cats, barn cats and indoor cats growing up and I have never seen one go after a puppy/dog, but I wouldn't want to say that they wouldn't. Especially since you do allow them to hunt. I just wouldn't want to take any chances regardless of how well I thought I knew my cats, and Yorkie puppies certainly are small enough for a mature cat, used to hunting, to do some damage to. |
I have 4 mature cats, over the course of the last year I have added 3 yorkies, the most recent addition a little 12 week old girl weighing 2.5lbs. In my expereince, the cats and the dogs co-exist but don't interact with each other. To be safe, when no one is home, the yorkies are in an ex-pen (the two same weight ones in one, the baby in one right beside them). I am just as worried about the 2 bigger pups going after the baby as the cats...so far we have had no problems at all (knock on wood). They seem to have figured things out amongst themselves, I am pretty lax as a pet owner though I don't involve myself in any play between the pets although I watch to make sure its only play. One of my cats is similar to yours...we have had to remove many a bunny off the back deck in the last few weeks. But that same cat causes no problems in our home and hasn't gone after the rest of the pack. I think its different for him when he is outside in hunting mode. |

Thanks for the advice, I will definitely watch closely. |
i have a cat that is almost 3 times the size of my yorkie. Morgan the yorkie is 4 years old and 5lbs. Skoshi the cat is about 2 years old and 14lbs. I got Skosh when she was a 8 weeks old stray kitten and they immediately bonded. Luckily now, skoshi thinks she's a dog. She does stalk and pounce on morgan sometimes but never like she's hunting, its always in play. skoshi also isn't very good at being stealthy. her big butt with "hide" behind a flip flop while she stalks . LOL anyway, i think what i'm getting at is that even though skosh and morgan are friends there is always the chance that because the fat cat is 14lbs she could hurt morgan even in play. i don't leave them alone together and are separated when i'm at work just in case. |
Welcome to YT!! I also have a large cat(with claws) and was very cautious when we first brought Ruby home. Just monitor them closely to see how they interact. Mine certainly aren't friends, but they tolerate each other:thumbup: |
