Does anyones dogs not have free roam??
 

just curious if anyone doenst allow free roam??

i just cant seem to get the all them completely potty trained..if there is carpeting they will potty...i am beyond frustrated and thinking of keeping them in the soft sided xpen thing i bought..and im home all day so i will give them time out side many times a day and some visiting time with the family..but mainly keep them on a tight regimen until the potty thing is right.

i scrubbed with the hand tool my kids carpet 2 weeks ago and placed the baby gate up..well my kids will continuously knocked it down, and make messes..pillows on the floor blankets on the floor..and im come in, the pillow has been marked the comforter has been marked..and i move the bed to get something and friggin poo everywhere! ugh! i cant stand that!

and maybe its because its midnight and i just wanted to go to bed..but now i have the urge to shampoo and disinfect their room...and put all the dogs for sale..i told my husband i was listing them right now. he laughed. ugh!

by morning ill feel silly for posting..but right now..ugh!...

thanks for the space to vent a little and i really wanted to know if some people dont allow free roam? i know i will feel bad because they have always been able to come n go as they please..i bought that soft side pet tent and LOVED it but the bottom is Velcro and they dig at it...and get out..ugh! so now i need a game plan to keep them in there.

I allow free roam in certain parts of my house because Zoe is only 12 weeks old and is not trained. She goes outside many times a day but still when I go into the hall, or sunroom I find places where she has little/and not so little puddles that show up on my white ceramic tile. I know..I know...but the tile was here long before the pup. LOL Also, I have a very sensitive nose and it really bothers me but like you all I can do is clean, clean clean till she is trained. If you know of any good floor deodorizers I'd appreciate you sharing. I've used Natures Miracle, Don Aslett's XO, Nilium, and Fabreze. Nothing helps..But I love my little baby so I guess I'll just have to wait it out. I'm sure by morning you'll feel better.

I never allow free roam until they are completely potty trained.

last time i scrubbed the carpet with my carpet shampooer i used a mixture..lol

it was lysol the blue one called pacific, which smells so freakin good..all with oxy liquid detergent and some snuggle fabric softner to keep the carpet plush...then water...and i used the hand held tool like for the sofa n steps and C L E A N E D the whole room with it..took a while but the smell was gone and it looked GREAT

well in that case mine may never have free roam again..;)

You have to be patient. House braking isn't easy.
It's a good thing to have your puppy in a small space confined at first and introduce him to your house gradually.
The odor of the carpets won't go away as far as your dog is concerned. You won't smell it but your dog will.
Don't get angry and frustrated in front of your dog and don't clean the mess in front of the dog. He will think that he should do it again just to see you clean.
You have to observe him and take him where he should do his job when you see that he sniffs after he eats and drinks water and wait there with him until he is relieved. Then praise him.
If you see him do it where he shouldn't you should say NO in a firm tone but not shout.
You must always be calm and confident, in order to gain his trust.
And again be very patient and you will be rewarded

Mya does not have free reign until she's potty trained.. She HATES it but too bad. Every night as we are getting ready for bed she'll jump up on my bed in the *hopes* that I'll let her sleep there with Oliver and I... I say to her that puppies that pee on my floor, don't get to sleep in my bed... I know she doesn't understand, but it makes me feel better, lol. She's 5 months old and we are just starting to see some improvement... takes a while. Hoping by the summer's end we're good. It would be nice not to have to crate her at night and when we're gone. I guess we just have to be patient.. easier said than done some days! lol

Rusty does not have free reign of the house yet either. When we are home he is only allowed uon the main level. Our downstairs is a finished basement and if we leave the door open he will sneak down there and poop..don't know why. Even if he has just gone to the bathroom outside he will poop down there if the can. Could be cause the cats litter box is down there and maybe he is trying to compete with her?? Who knows lol!

He is never allowed to roam when we are not home. He is confined to his crate (which he loves). It took a few years for us to trust our "big" dog with not being locked in his crate while we are not home. We still put him in it when we go to work (he prefers it) but if I forget to crate him it is not a huge deal. Rusty is not there yet! But he is alot better than he was. When we first brought him home he had to be confined to just the room we were in or he would pee on everything!

It takes alot of patience and time....don't give up;)

im thinking the baby (14 weeks) did the pooing and the male who is a year did the marking..which i never see him do it...my oldest female will potty on things when she is mad at you..and hell shes been mad since we had kids..LOL..its true...so today i let them out and then put them in the tent thing with food n water...and im not letting them out to socialize..

I keep some of the doors in our house shut--my daughter's room in case she has a toy out that they want to eat, and my bedroom because for some reason, they feel the need to pee on my bathroom rug.

When I'm not there, there is always at least one of them, usually 2 in a crate. (Not a carrier, but a BIG crate.) OR confined to a bathroom or bathroom & bedroom. They never roam free when we're not there.

I keep a baby gate up at the bottom of my basement stairs. There is just nothing but trouble for them to get into down there. I figure when you have kids too (I have teenagers down there) you have to be careful of what kinds of things they leave lay around that can be dangerous so it is not only a potty training issue, but a safety issue. During the day, I also close the doors to my bedrooms and utility room. That gives my girls the rest of the house to play, which is not really a lot of space left. If I had one that was continuously going to the same spot or room, I would definitely restrict access to that place.

Not free until potty trained. I do give her some play/run time in the kitchen though. The less of a chance for an accident, the better. She spends time in an x-pen set-up when I'm home and crated while I'm out and at bedtime.

Jackson's had free roam since 5 months old pretty much. The thing was, he still wasn't 100% potty trained by then, but he NEVER once had an accident when we weren't home. He only had accidents when we WERE home, lol. When we're gone, he literally just sleeps the whole time, haha.

We did a crate for maybe 2 weeks, then moved to an ex-pen for a bit, then he got babygated in my bedroom, then got free roam.

Although when we visited and slept over my dads house, he has had free roam since probably 14-ish weeks old... my dad felt too bad leaving him crated when the 2 other dogs were not (big sap!) and I was so scared but we only left for 1/2 hour and came back to perfect little angels. The upstairs, however, is gated off because the cats live up there. I've just been really lucky, he's not destuctive when no one is home anyways.

Pixie who is 22 months old still doesn't have free roam of the house when we are not home. We put up a childsgate between livingroom and a hallway to the rest of the house. She has full roam of the Livingroom, diningroom and kitchen. Also some the doors are closed. She is pretty much potty trained, but she will poop in my livingroom when we are gone. She'll poop and pee every morning outside, but sometime during the day she'll poop in the livingroom. I'm only feeding once at day at dinnertime and it still doesn't help. When we are home she has full roam of the house and no accidents. She'll let us know when she needs to go out. It does take time an patients.:thumbup:

Is it possible to gate off a certain room or two for them that is not carpeted? Rocco doesn't have free roam yet, but he is left out of his crate while we are not home and has the kitchen, dining/family area (NO carpets). I close the bedroom off the kitchen and gate the hallway to contain him. When I'm home and have time to watch him (like a hawk) I will allow him to be in other rooms while I'm with him and teach him as I go. So please be patient and don't feel badly - looks like most of us are in the same boat! :D

i can shut doors but i have 5yr old n a 2 yr old boys..doors wont stay shut long =)

only have one room with carpet, the kids room..my baby gate is still up so far today ;)

Sophie Kate is 2 years old and just started with limited free roam and for no more than 3 hours. She has to earn the extra time, so far so good.

Not complete full roam.......all carpet areas are off limits until they are with us.

The rest is laminate wood flooring (and a little tile).....but we still gate off areas.....as they always find that one little thing that we forgot to put up. (We have more accidents when it is cold/wet that this time of year.)

When we are gone, we split them up into two rooms.....but that is really just to limit who is alone with who all day. (Have two females that are not always best friends.)

i gave mine free roam after about a year and a half, when i knew she was well potty trained and no teething... i started her in my master bathroom when she was a puppy, then extended it out to my bedroom. now she has the house. i think she likes it.

My little 9 month old has limited free roam usually when I can keep an eyeball on her because she will find a spot to potty on no matter what. But I keep all the other bedroom and bathroom doors closed. We could have just went on a walk and she potted twice and if I don't watch her she will potty again. She mostly says gated in my room. Especially when I go in to the bathroom. She will make a huge puddle in front of the door if she is loose. She loves to drive me crazy. =3 This week is the first week to start her limited unsupervised roaming. She only has had one accident today. :D
