health issues Everyone: I have a five month old yorkie named Teddy who is a very picky eater. I am having trouble finding things that he likes to eat. He has had some episodes of low blood sugar symptoms and I am worried it is because he doesn't eat right. Can someone give me some advice on this? I would be so greatful. Thank you, Teddy's worried mom. |
Have you tried fixing up some rice and chicken. Mine both love it. |
Yes, I agree, rice and chicken is something most of them love. I mix it in Princess's food, and she eats it right up. :) |
Health issues i am going to be watching this thread. I am having the same issues with Ceeby. I have tried to feed him everything people on here have suggested and nothing works. he eats a bite or two then stops and never eats it again. I had some chicken and rice puppy food and he seemed to love it then he only ate it that one time. |
just a note from experience... check to see if your babies are cutting teeth. Their mouths are very sore and this causes them to not want to eat.... esp. the hard dry kibble. In my case I've used natural balance roll type... they love this.... it is semi moist and easier to chew... also I've used Wellness canned food.. Chicken and rice is a good idea but I don't know if its balanced enough to use long term. Anyway, good luck... hope you find something.. it is scary when they won't eat and get hypoglycemia episodes.. I always give mine a little Nuti-cal before going to bed to get through the night. |

That is exactly how Teddy eats. One day he will totally love something and the next day he does not want it. He doesn't even care for doggie treats. So it's a constant stuggle (and waste of food) to try to get him to eat. I am not sure if he is cutting teeth, but I'm hoping that he comes around. Let me know if you find anything that Ceeby likes on a regular basis and I'll do the same. Good Luck. |
Thanks everybody, I really appreciate the feedback. If I find a something that works I'll let everyone know. :animal-sm |
I agree with the others who say this might be teething. You might wanna try moist food for while . My dogs really like Lil Caesars. |

hallelujah! I HAVE found something Ceeby likes. Well, more than anything else. I had my pet store get me some Chickson Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul and he eats it far better than anything else. I can get him to eat a few bites of the dry kibble but if I put a little warm water in it, he will eat about a tblespoon or tablespoon and a half. The warm water makes almost a gravy and I feed him out of my hand. Not good, I now but at least he is eating it/. he only gets the toddler meat sticks now for a treat. Try that for your baby. I have bought all kinds of puppy food that people have suggested. i even cooked chicken and rice for him. Nothing. but he seems to like this. |
10 years of cooking for mine and she wasn't getting all her vitamins and stuff dogs need. I worried about it too. I finally found Natural balance beef rolls and she loves it. You can get the little rolls to try for like 89 cents in different flavors - they have puppy, beef, lamb, turkey. And it has all the stuff dog really need. I always felt like I was a bad mommy because I couldn't get mine to eat - now I feel so much better. Of course for 9 years I supplied the neighbors with different dog foods. |
My Cali is 18 weeks old now and had 2 episodes of hypoglcemia even with me watching for it because I couldn't get her to eat at first. I tried so many different foods my cabinet looks like a pet store (I am going to donate to a shelter). The only thing I found she would eat was Caesars beef adult dog food. I was worried about the nutritional value but I had to get her to eat. I put on the Iams beef puppy sauce/gravy hoping this will give her her nutrients. So far she has been fine since I found a food she likes. I still try different ones but to no avail. |
Kelli is a very picky eater, if she doesn't want something she'll nudge it away with her nose and then devour it the next day. One thing that we've found that she loves alot is carrots and green beans, more than any other veggie. We mash and mix a tiny bit with her food and she will eat it right up. Sometimes, if she's being particularly picky we'll feed her, which I know is bad but it gets her to eat and gets nutrients in her on the days that she's being stubborn. Also, we never use canned veggies, only fresh or frozen. Cuts on the sodium. All veggies are boiled, too, with nothing added. :) She could eat veggies all day long if we let her. We also do the boiled chicken breast, too. Mixing it with just a little bit of her food every now and then. We try not to deviate too much from what she normally eats, but these are tricks we use most of the time to get her to eat when she just won't. |
Loki was super picky but it's getting better. Luckily we had no issues with low blood sugar so if he refused his food I just let him wait until the next day to eat - and he did. Since you can't do that, here are some random suggestions: Add good quality low sodium chicken stock (not canned broth, get the good stuff in the box) to his food. It will make the food soft and irresistable. Add Omega 3 fish oil - Loki loves this. Does he like Cheese? We use cheese flavored Charlee Bear treats - he loves those. Most others make him sick. Also, for treats try the Natural Balance meat rolls (PetCo) - they are like a big salami for dogs. Too salty to use for food, but OK for treats and better than things like puperoni. Put Easy Cheese on his food. Gross right? But man they love the stuff. Same with peanut butter. Try Innova Evo. I don't know what makes this food so good to them but man Loki can smell a sample bag of it a mile away. He is on a different food right now and I had considered switching him but I am happy with what he is on. He LOVES the taste of the evo. And, get sample packs. All of the good companies will give you samples. This way you don't waste food (although lots of places will take it back.) Try these companies: http://www.canidae.com http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=inn-home http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/ http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/ Try hand feeding OR try getting something called a Busy Buddy Twist & Treat: http://www.busybuddytoys.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=2 Loki will refuse his dog food from his bowl but eat is from this silly toy. You just fill it with food and line up the hole and they kick it around and food comes out. Also, try a different bowl or throw the food on the floor. Loki HATES the stainless steel bowl I got him and when I switched to a big ceramic bowl he will now eat out of his bowl. He also gets super excited about eating out of a paper bowl?? When I am washing his dishes I give him paper bowls and he loves them because he will eat all of his food and then steal the bowl and shred it! HA!! Throwing the food on the floor works for lots of dogs, not sure why? Finally, you can try taking the food away and trying to make him learn to eat when you feed him. Maybe offer it every 2 hours for 15 mins. If he doesn't eat - pick it up. I do this with Loki and if he is more interested in playing than eating I just let him see me go over and start to pick up his bowl and he will come and eat. I like him to eat on a regular schedule so this has helped me out. I don't let him graze. Sorry for the randomness but I hope something helps!!!!!! |
My lil guy has had hypoglycemia since I've had him. At first I tried everything to balance his sugar out and nothing really seemed to keep him balanced out because he is such a finicky eater. I finally found out what he always likes and never gets tired of, scrammbled eggs with cheese. I give this to him once a day along with his other meals and he has been doing great. His sugar has been under control and he's as fiesty as can be. Good luck :aimeeyork |
Chloe did the same thing at the beginning of last week she wouldnt eat her dry food so I went to the pet store and bought five different types and brands of foods for her to try well she decided on canned food but know this week she just nudges it with her nose and I have to go over to her bowl and put it on my finger and then she will eat it (she is so spoiled) but she has to eat so if I have to feed her by hand for the rest of her life I guess I will |
