The word Kennel
 

Hello everyone, I'm looking for a yorkie but when i check out an Ad in the paper or on the web the word Kennel stops me from going any further. I guess my interpetation of that word brings me to believe that it's more of a business than a passion. Does any one have a better insight to this?

My husband breds, trains and sells AKC Field Champion Beagles. He advertises under the name "Indian Hills Kennels". These dogs ARE his passion. Sure he makes a little money on the dogs but primarily uses the Kennel name for dog trials and shows. We are recognized instantly and when the winner is announced with that name, they know who the trainer and breeder is immediately. Our Kennel is our huge barn with several separate stalls and with several runs out back. We also have several acres fenced in to train the dogs in. People are always welcome here to see our operation and they do come. They come from every part of the United States to see our dogs or bred a bitch or buy one. These dogs are treated like one of the family. I have often said they are actually treated better than I am. LOL They have the best food that money can buy. They have the best wormer, shots and etc that money can buy. THEY ARE OUR FAMILY. I realize that not every kennel operates like ours do and that beagles are a whole different ballgame from Yorkies but, please do not write this person off because they used the word "kennel" That is a very wrong assumption you have made. Good luck finding your baby.

The assumption was just that. I didn't mean to offend you or anyone who will read this later on. I was just wanting to know if the standards were the same as someone who breeds for show potential etc. Sounds like your husband does go to great lengths to take care of his beagles and wish him well. I guess it just proves that you have to judge by the individual and not the name. Thank you

It's a word that we CAN associate with a GOOD place or a bad place ...it really depends on what they look like whether it has a good meaning...I know the couple of "Kennels" I've been to weren't something I liked...but there ARE kennels out there run by caring people who really put the needs of the dogs first - it's just a matter of really seeing it for yourself

You didn't offend me in any way. I was just trying to explain it to you. yes, my husband does go to great lengths to care for his dog. he has been featured on the cover of a few mags and our program has produced many Field Champions. Yet, when we have puppies he wants to keep them all. he will say he is going to keep them a little while to see what kind of dogs they make or they are his favorites and he wants to train them to hunt with him then we get over run with dogs. We are dog poor. My Yorkie makes us three in the house now. They are all spoiled rotten. When we get an inside dog, it stays until it dies. I have a very old (17 years) mini-poo that it is in reasonably good health but I am preparing myself for the day that I know can't be too far away.

When I was making my first website I used the name Kennel in my title. and I know I was just useing it for a name because we are no kennel. so I think it can be used both ways.

I think it all depends on the kennel itself...most use the name kennel when the are using it for another reason (showing, agility, flyball, etc)...and then they also breed or sell as well...but I would check them out before you purchase to make sure you know what you are getting into!!

My dream is to have a Yorkie "kennel" (here if you have more that three adult dogs you must become a kennel and be licensed as such) BUT before you decide to purchase a pup please always go and visit the home life first! That way you can see if it is a puppy mill or a kennel. Just thought I would put my two cents worth in :D :D :D :D

It's what is behind the word "kennel" that counts. The place you find your furkid -- whether it is a "kennel" or a "home" is only as good as the people who stand behind the name.

This is true here too. If more then three dogs you must have a kennels license.

very well said! I don't have kennel in my name now, but i used to, due to the beautiful dogwood trees that line my back yard...i then found that a couple other people were using the same kennel name and i opted to change so that i wouldnt be confused with any of them...i chose "butterfly yorkies" because i think of a yorkie the same as a butterfly...they start out as a little black and tan (caterpillar) and then they bloom (change) into different colors like a beautiful butterfly does!

Since we're on the subject...sort of...I'm going to have to have a 'name' I suppose when it is time for our pups to go to new homes. Just for paper's sake I guess. Any ideas? My dad suggested M & M Kennels, but I told him we had puppies, not candy! Plus, I don't have a "kennel" per say. I think of a kennel as someplace where you board a dog...not as my bathroom/house!
