Dog's Whining is driving me CRAZY!!!! I have three Yorkies. My two girls are ten and the boy is 8. One of the girls has lost her sight due to an untreatable genetic disorder. The vet assured me that she would adapt well to blindness. It's been about a year, and she whines constantly. From the moment we get up in the morning until bedtime. Sometimes even while she's eating and sleeping. She does not seem to be in pain and has a clean bill of health from the vet. She was always a verbal dog, but the whining is now constant and driving me crazy. I am convinced that she is miserable and is not at all adapting to being blind. She is also the alpha dog - not sure if this has anything to do with it or not. I have tried ignoring her, paying more attention to her, scolding her, nothing seems to work. I don't know how to help her. Any suggestions? |

She must be very confused and scared not being able to see..... also talk to her often so she knows she is close to you... Welcome to YT. I agree with the suggestions given above. Let her know you're always around, just the sound of your voice must be re-assuring. Maybe when she's sleeping, you could make sure she has something of yours so she can smell your presence. I know this must be frustrating for you and for her. I hope you can find something that helps.:) |
Bless her little heart. I know the whining must be very frustrating to you but just imagine how she feels. I truely believe that she is whining for a reason. Prayers for the little sweetie. |
I agree that I would get her checked by the vet. Daisy use to whine and moan in her sleep when she had crystals in her urine and now she has the lyme disease. As far as the blindness I know it is frustrating to hear her whine but you have got to help her feel secure again. Can you imagine if you lost your eye sight all the adjustments that you would have to go through. I agree that you should talk to her a lot and touch her a lot so that she knows that she is safe and secure. Make sure you enhance the senses that she does have left. hearing and touching and smelling. If you stimulate those senses she will be a happier dog.. Good luck..sending prayers to you;) |

I am so sorry to hear that your baby is not well. I would probably have her health checked again, as 'spritiwings1202' suggested. Just to be sure. My Kady lost an eye to cancer of the retina when she was about 10 yrs old. Two years later the other one had to be removed due to glucoma and she adapted well to being able to get around but she would whin and bark if she got lost in the house. The whining got alot worse when she developed doggie alzheimers but she had other symptoms too. I just adopted alittle blind maltese puppy and she does great but sometimes she gets behind the couch and can't seem to find her way out and she will whin or bark. Blind dogs want to feel secure. This puppy likes to be in a crate with her blankets that she can snuggle in when she gets tired. They suggest putting a bell around your ankle so they can hear you when you walk and if have other dogs to put a bell on their collar. You can go under blinddogrescue.com and there is some info about blind dogs. |

I'm sorry to hear about your girls eyesight. :( What an ordeal to go through, I can't even imagine. Once all health issues are resolved and making sure she's healthy, there was a good episode of Dog Whisperer with a blind Yorkie. Basically she had been babying him alot, and you need to not feel sorry for the blind dog, but feel good because she's still alive, ya know? Your positive energy will help her out more than anything. |
