Question: Floppy Ears On Puppy Hello, At some point in the future I'll be on the lookout for another Yorkie. While looking around recently I saw a picture of a 9 week old and saw that it's ears were floppy.(more flop than erect) My question is: Are floppy ears at age 9 weeks an indication of how the ears will be when it's an adult? Are there statistics about this sort of thing? The floppiness is more pronounced and with my inexperience, I'd be guessing that at adulthood they would still be the same... or maybe a little more erect, but still with some floppiness. What are the chances the ears will be fully erect? Just curious. Thanks, Matthias |
Our new pup had floppy ears at 12 wks old. I've been massaging them and he now has a floppy ear at 15 wks old. My wife is not amused. "He's ears better not stay that way! That ear better start standing up, or the other one better go back down! It's driving me crazy looking at him!" LOL |
9 weeks is way to young to tell anything. Even if they are up by then, when they are teething, the ears flop down sometimes. You can tape, and trim the ear hair down to make them lighter, and massage the ears to help them stand. The how to guide is somewhere on this forum. If not, ask the breeder, they should know how to do this. |
My little guys use to be up, but I think he got lazy and now they are CUTE and floppy!! Sometimes one is up and one is down..Depends on the day and that is how we like it!! Different...Good luck! |
Not all ears are going to stand. The best way to deal with floppy ears is trimming the hair and doing massages and if needed taping. Sometimes you can add yogurt to their feedings around teething time to help replace the calcium they use to build their teeth. In some cases you will see ears flop well into the 3rd month. I had to keep my little guys ears shaved weekly and massage 2 times a day for several weeks to get them to stand. Im not sure I could of done the taping myself. Not that I don't believe in it, I just am not talented enough to hold a dog and tape at the same time...:) Either way I've seen some great photos of floppy and standing eared yorkies. I personally think those with floppy ears have serious personality to go with the ears. They always make me smile with out fail. |
My Zoe's ears are floppy too. She's 12 wks old. We have taken her to the vet to have her ears taped only to come home and within the hour the tape is completely off. So we tape them ourselves (much cheaper that way) for a couple of days at a time. They might stand up for a day and then back down again. But if they can stand for even a day I have a little hope that they may eventually stand up all the time. Good luck. |
I forgot to mention I give my puppy cottage cheese. She loves it and it gives her added calcium. |
Hanna's ears flopped until she was over 4 months old. I just shaved them and messaged them and they stand up great now. |
I had a Westie who was having problems getting his ears to stand. What the vet told me to do was to take a pencil and curve the ear around it (what you're looking for is a U shape) and put a couple wraps of scotch tape around it to hold the position (no pencil! it's just a guide). It's lightweight, doesn't bother them after a few minutes, and helps the ear "learn". It could take a couple of weeks or a month or so ... Teething seems to make ears that *had* been standing fall over again. Don't know what the correlation is, but afterwards, the ears go back up. In any event, the floppy ears on pups are adorable. Even the one up/one down are just as cute as can be. Do a forum search for pics for the floppy ears and you'll see what I mean :D |
Cottage Cheese Please! Aloha, I was just given a male Yorkie Puppy as a 47th Birthday Present! My Birthday was on 5/27, but the Breeder whom is a Personal Friend gave me him early......5/4 @ the time he was about 12 weeks old with 1/2 floppy & 1/2 erect ears! I immediately shaved both the inside & outside of his ears and started feeding him a tablespoon of cottage cheese a day and by the 15th week his Ears were standing straight up. I constantly scratched/massaged and whistled so he would hold them up on his own, if it did'nt happen Naturally I was going to "Tape" them? I know his Mother & 1/2 Sister from a previous Litter and their ears were Standing/Erect and Up. |
I can't keep Rhett's ears taped for more than 20 minutes at a time. I've given up and will just let him be with his half-mast ears. It suits his personality. |
That's some very good information and advice to look into. I do like the appearance of erect ears. I also didn't like floppy ears because of lack of air flow inside the canal which could lead to problems. I know keeping the hair trimmed would help. If I get a yorkie with floppy ears as a puppy, I'll consider the options, but just as I started to type something came to me... I think if the ears ended up being floppy, that's the way it rolls out and I could live with it. Seeing yorkies with floppy ears makes them no less cute to look at!
