Yorkie having a nightmare?
 
My Teddy boy can produce some interesting sounds. Last night, a couple hours after we went to bed, I was jolted from my slumber by a very loud and unusual high-pitched noise that sounded like a cross between a child crying and a firetruck siren. It was Teddy!

I switched on the light and he was shaking in his bed. Was he having a nightmare? Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Dogs do dream so I can imagine that they can have nightmares too. While I don't think Cooper has shown signs of a nightmare, there are lots of times when he let's out soft little barks while he's sleeping. His body also has slight movements and sometimes his mouth moves around, but nothing as extreme as you described. My guess (& I really have no idea) is that it was a nightmare.

My older boy Max is like Cooper. His legs will move and he trembles a bit, but it always looks like he is having a good time.

I think Teddy might still be on edge at night after that big thunderstorm we had a couple weeks ago. Poor baby.

Levi definitely has dreams - and sometimes it looks like he is having nightmares. He lets out soft barks and growls. It's kind of cute :)

I'm just glad he doesn't sleepwalk like this dog!!

If what you describe continues she might have R.E.M. sleep disorder. In most dogs there is no detectable cause. Our vet perscribed Clonazepam and that did help.

Kacee has had what I believed to be bad dreams twice in five years. She'd be asleep and suddenly start the most mournful howling. I'd wake her and she would be fine. It just sounded so pitiful.:(

Nikki my 15 year old rehome/former rescue has had about 5 incidents where he cries in his sleep. I feel so bad for him. Who knows what happened to him in his previous life. I just softly pet him.

Thank you for the info. I'm not too worried because he normally sleeps quite well.

I remember your thread now about crying in his sleep. Poor Nikki.

Teddy is always happy. He is my sunshine boy. So I'm thinking this must be related to our recent thunderstorm.

I know he would love to sleep in my bed with his brother Max, but I can't do it yet for a number of reasons. Teddy's open crate is right next to my bed. I wish I could talk Max into giving up the bed to be near his brother.

Yes, sounds almost identical to something "one" of my babies did, but couldn't figure which one.

My baby boy use to have several bad dreams and now it's dropped off to almost never now... thank God. :) It was obvious he wasn't having a good dream.

When he started whining or crying in his sleep, I would keep calling his name softly to louder until he woke. I didn't want to startle him to awake, so I did it softly at first. Never knew why he did it, but I always comforted him after the dream.

Maybe your baby will quit someday too? Hopefully.

My vet once told me that dogs have two dreams. The good one and the bad one. He also said to never wake a dog up during a dream.
