Smoke Detectors and Dogs DH is on his way to the store now as we have 5 bedrooms with smoke detectors going off every 30 minutes :( so we have been replacing batteries. My poor dex is freaking out and i keep taking him out to the car to sit in his doggie car seat. My girls do not freak out much but now DD is walking with tail down scared :( any pointers on smoke detectors? I know manufacturer said only a certain battery so we get those only but seriously frustrated tonight :( |
Can you take the batteries out until you get new batteries or are they hard wired in to your electric? Good luck. |

I feel your pain...trust me!! A few years back...i came home to my fire alarms going off. At that time i had just my siberian husky...the poor dog was upstairs wayyyy in the back of the closet...looking for an area that wasnt so loud. The poor baby was shaking. Later we found out one of our fire alarms was defective.(we had just had the house built too..thank you mr electrician:rolleyes:) Now every year..we pick a day around the same month (we chose november) and change ALL the batteries. With hard wired alarms its so hard...cause when one starts to go...they ALL start to go. So we'd rather be safe than sorry. |
Did changing the batteries fix the problem? It's strange for all of the hardwired ones to go off at the same time. |
They are usually all on the same power line, so if one goes off in the basement, you will hear it on the upstars alarms and vice versa. Best to repalce the entire unit every 5 years as that is about all they are good for and to repalce the batteries every year. It drives the Youkie nuts. She hates the sound. You can also just disconnect one from the power until you get the battery. |
We had hard-wired ones and ended up disconnecting them and buying the regular plain old battery ones . . .When we built a 2nd floor onto our house in 01 the law required hard wired alarms. . .they worked great for a few years, then all of a sudden, without warning, without fail they would go off in the middle of the night . . .usually between 2 - 3 am which scared the living crap outta me . . .I figured the first time, well maybe I need to make sure there are no webs, so I'd vacum them . . .nope, didn't work . . .they only went off during the middle of the night . . .when one goes off it signals the rest of them . . .it was ANNOYING! I figured it was just a spirit visiting that liked to wake up the household. :p |

They are on one, but chances are they do not have a dedicated line. They share with other electrical items. You will most likely have to flip off each breaker, and while you do that, have another person yell out that the small green light on your Alarm went off, or that the sirens started. Once you dind the line, then just mark it. Usually they are not on a line with major appliances, but some wall outlets and ceiling lights. With the battery back-up ones, even if you kill the power, the alarm will still sound because of the battery. Only way to quiet them all is to remove the battery, and disconnect the alarm from the power source. Or, just change the alarms at 5 years and the battery every year. Usually you will never have a problem with the wiring, but an Alarm can go bad anytime. I have had news ones not work right..... |

First Alert is fine. I use the FIREX brand, Model 4580 with the battery door on the front so the battery's are easy to replace. FireX Smoke Alarms- Direct Wire/Battery (AC/DC) You may need need to install new brackets, but the wiring is the same, and real simple. If I can do it, anyone can. |
