Is it too soon to bring another one home? Ok, I've definitely caught yorkie fever. Rhett's 20 weeks now and just a bundle of joy. But I want a little girl, too. My dh is out of state this week. There is a 10 week old female yorkie at a rescue in the area he's at. Would I be a fool to tell him to bring her with him? Should I wait until Rhett is older? Would bringing another puppy in make him less likely to keep bonding with us? |
A puppy that young is rare in a rescue. Are you certain this is a reputable rescue? Some BYB'rs and brokers often pose as rescues as a way of moving their "stock" more quickly. What's the name of the rescue? If you're comfortable that it is a good rescue group, then no, I don't think it's too early to bring another home. My Becca was only 6 months younger than Alexander and they were inseparable for more than 11 years and were both extremely bonded to me. You need to think about whether you have the time and the money to have 2 dogs right now - they take a lot of both. :) |
This is her. Do you know anything about this rescue? Adoptable Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie: Allie: Petfinder |
I don't think it is too soon. I have a 6 month old Pomeranian and a 4 month old yorkie. They really love having each other as a Playmate. |

I have to say, this little girl is CUTE! I can see why you want to bring her home. :) |
I just looked at link you provided. Cute little puppy! |

I like that she's going to be a bigger girl. I need someone who can give Rhett a run for his money. |

Is Rhett mixed or a pure Yorkie? Since you don't know what these puppies are mixed with, you won't have any idea how big they will grow to be OR what they will look like later. Their mom is 12lbs and that is a big Yorkie too. I know for me I would want my two to be about the same size and look like a Yorkie full grown. |

LOL! :D a Porkie Yorkie! That's too cute! |
He is adorable :) I'm sorry but I don't know anything about them either. There is a process of adopting so it might to be as easy as you think to bring him home. Nothing wrong with a bigger mix~I have 2 myself and love them to death :D They are all in the HUGE 11-12 lb range ;) Good luck if you decided to give it a shot at adopting. :) |
I am totally uncomfortable with a rescue that adopts puppies out at such a young age. In looking at their "website" I see that they are aligned with: Rescue Alliance of Hairless & Other Breeds, Inc :: Home That is apparently someone who has decided to represent independent rescuers...I don't have the time right now to totally look over their site, but it just seems that the way this is done, there is no one minding the store so to speak. While these people who have these puppies may be well intentioned, I don't get releasing puppies at that age! I shudder to think what will happen to them later...we never release a pup until it is altered. |
I think you should contact them and get the full story. It doesn't hurt to ask!! I will say that if they rescued the momma dog when she was preggo, what rescue would use their funds to doc tails when it isn't necessary? They're not purebred anyway and it wouldn't make sense to use a rescues limited resources. Just a thought! |
I thank you for all your opinions about the rescue. I know applying for one isn't easy, so I won't get my hopes up if we decide to apply. The spay/neuter prior to rehoming does seem to vary with each organization. The one my parent's went through allowed them to take their boy home un-neutered only because the vet wasn't comfortable doing the procedure until he topped 3 lbs. They had to put an extra deposit on him that was refunded after he was neutered. He quickly reached that thanks to my dad . Their little girl came home to them and was spayed a few days later. |

"Porkie Yorkie," LOVE it!!!! My Charlie is going to be a porkie Yorkie. He weighted in at 7.5 at 15 weeks!! Not sure what he is now; he's going to the vet next week I think. I wanted a tiny one (bad arthritis in my hands) but I can't imagine not having him. He's perfect for us! I've been thinking of getting another, too. I go back and forth thinking having two around the same age has advantages and disadvantages. The only thing holding me back right now is my budget. If that changed any time soon, I'd get another in a second. |

The general public is getting all of the puppies they need from breeders and turning around and dumping them in shelters. :( |

Working in shelters is no picnic. I have a lot of respect for people who can do it. They are in a totally different position than rescues and do have to place pups intact and hope for the best. They don't have the luxury of keeping them until they are old enough to be altered. |
To answer your original question about if it is too soon to bring another one home, I'd suggest you read this article. Most trainers recommend that you wait until your first puppy is one year old (and totally housetrained and well mannered). Dogs are like kids and will pick up bad behavior from one another. Housebreaking two can be very difficult. You also have the "teenage" stage ahead of you when Rhett will test his boundaries by challenging your authority. Two teenagers can be very difficult. Two puppies are double the time commitment as they both need individual training. Two Puppies or One? - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! |
LadyJane- thank you for your great posts. I wanted to update this thread. After much thinking about and talking it over with my husband, we decided to not pursue adopting that sweet little girl. I still want another yorkie. But I'm going to stick with my original plan. I want Rhett to continue on through his obedience courses and get his Canine Good Citizen certification before I bring another baby home. I want him to be the best big brother he can possibly be. We've also found that Rhett has a special talent. In addition to loving kids, he adores sitting with my youngest daughter while she reads out loud. We found out that the county next to us has a therapy program in their schools that uses dogs to sit with 4th graders while they practice their reading skills. We are going to pursue getting Rhett certified to do that. That's going to take a lot of time and dedication and it wouldn't be fair to take that time away from a new puppy. I know when we are ready, there will be another rescue who needs a forever home. |

You are going to have fun working with Rhett! He is a lucky pup! :) |
