Something horrible happened.... Hey guys. Something horrible happened yesterday because of me. I'll start from the beginning. I work from 8 to 5, and during that time my brother is home to watch TeeJay. When I come home, TeeJay automatically senses it and starts barking and scratching at the door. It has become a ritual that when I come to the door, I start knocking and calling "TeeJay". Hearing him excited to see me is so cute so I kind of tease him in that way. Well yesterday, when I came home from work, I ran to the door, and starting knocking and calling "TeeJay" but heard nothing. My assumption was that my brother had probably taken him for a walk. So when I opened the door, there he was in front of the door.. CHOKING. He was heaving and gagging at the same time. I could see how much he was trying to breath, with his chest going in but with no air coming out. His little shoulders were going up and down with every heave. And I could tell in his face that he was struggling to survive. I started panicking and freaking out which probably made him more scared than he was. I grabbed him and took him immediately to Pet Emergency, which is luckily right down the street from me. They were able to clear his airway in the nick of time. You should've seen me, I was such a nervous wreck. Even as I type this, my eyes well up with tears. When I came home, I was so angry at my brother for not watching him carefully. But what he told me, broke my heart. Teejay was eating his dog food when I came to the door and started knocking and teasing him. He got excited and ran to the door with food still in his mouth and choked. IT IS MY FAULT THAT TEEJAY CHOKED. If he didnt get to Pet Emergency on time, then he would have died. I feel so horrible and feel like such a bad owner. I dont want anybody to say it's not my fault or there was nothing I could've done, because that's not true. It is 100% my fault and there was something I could've done. And that's to not tease him for my own selfish pleasure of hearing him bark and scratch at the door. I'm sorry guys. I cant type this anymore. |
OH SWEETIE I konw you said don't say this - but - THIS ISN'T YOUR FAULT !!! I'm sooooo glad you saved him but don't blame yourself !! My girls FREAK out too when I come home and this is just the way yorkies are.....You didn't do anything wrong here and I'm just happy for you that he's ok....They can scare us to death and what you did was JUST THE RIGHT THING - I know they have a Hemlick (don't know how to spell it) manuver and CPR Thread here on this site - I think it's in the Sick and Injured Section - but your fast acting saved him and that's what counts - don't blame yourself - lots of things excite yorkies....this could happen even without what you were doing.... |
Thank God he's fine and take it as a lesson learned for us all. Ladyt & Kiki :aimeeyork |
AWW dont beat yourself up over this...It was an accident, just a freak thing. He probably loves playing this game with you! Yoda was in my lap one night and daddy came home...My favorite thing to say to him is "daddy's home" and he will run for the door. Well when jumping out of my lap he hit his head on the edge of my desk and let out a very loud cry. We still play the daddy's home game but I just make sure he wont hit the edge of the desk now....It really is not your fault...freak things happen all of the time. You reacted quickly and he knows your heart is full of love for him! :) |
Oh my gosh that must have been so scarry for you. BUT the important thing is the TeeJay is ok! Just dont be to hard on yourself. You got him help in time and that is what counts. Hugs :) |
I know you said not to say this, but it really isn't your fault! please don't beat your self up over this! you saved his life! im so thankful that he's ok! i'm sure he loves playing the game just as much as you do!! :) |
The choking on food was just a freak accident and not your fault. It is a good lesson for all to remember to keep your comings and goings very low key. It greatly reduces the chance of your pup developing separation anxiety issues. Simple "Hi, how was your day?" and "See you later" without a lot of fuss make for happier dogs. |
Oh, I am so glad TeeJay is well thanks to you being so very quick to take him to the vet. If you want to say this is your fault....well, absolutely everything is our fault then. We buy them every toy, harness, leash, treat and piece of food. We buy the furniture that they jump off of because it is comfortable for us to sit on. See what I am saying....even though you don't want to hear it....It really isn't your fault. However, you do get full credit for getting him to the vet so quickly that it saved his little life! I'm sure you coming home every day is the highlight of his day and that he enjoys your little welcome home party just as much as you do. |
Not your fault! It's not your fault! That could have happened when he was excited about anything or nothing. However, it's good that you kept your head well enough to get him help. When I was a little girl our poodle choked on her food. She was struggling just as you described. My mother and sisters were hysterical, but I react in an emergency by becoming overly calm (then I fall apart when it's over). I stuck my finger down the poodle's throat and came up with a mass of half chewed food that got stuck when she swallowed too much, too soon. Then she took a big breath and I was hysterical and everyone else settled down. Our poodle was about a 15 pound dog and it wasn't hard to do put my finger down her throat and bend it slightly to make a little hook to "fish" with. I remember EXACTLY how it felt even though it was in 1969. But with one of our tiny babies, I don't even know if a finger would fit down their throats. Does anyone know? Regardless, you saved your baby's life. That could have happened at any time the dog was trying to eat too fast. It wasn't your fault! |
Oh my goodness. You have me in tears!!! Thank God he is fine. He loves his mommy sooooooooooo much!!! You didn't do anything wrong. Really, think about it. You just love your baby as he loves you. It just happened that he was eating as you got home. |
Oh my gosh how scary! I am so glad that I was not in your shoes, as I would have been so shaken up that i would not have known what to dol I am so glad that everything turned out fine! |
I know this was scary but it was not anyone's fault, it was an accident and they just happen. Fortunately everything turned out well. |
Thanks guys. You all are truly amazing. I do feel alot better after reading your comments. I do know there are many factors that could of lead up to this "incident" but I cant help but feel that it's my fault and I guess time is the only thing that can heal me. Anyways, reading each and every comment actually broke me down to tears. I really Thank each and every one of you.. my second family.. for your support. |
Not your fault. We all love our yorkie's ways, don't we? Do not fault yourself. Just be grateful you did the right thing right away. I try to avoid not making a fuss when I leave the house, but I get all excited myself when I come home and see they get so excited too! Glad all worked out! |
OMG!!!! I can't believe he made it till you got help. How lucky you are to live close. It's not your fault, as said before just one of those freak things you NEVER want to happen. I do, want to know though what do we do in this situation!! |
