neuter question My Sarge is going in tomorrow to be neutered. He is almost 2 years old. Will his age make his recovery harder? Also, the vet wants to keep him overnight. Is this necessary? My little girl came home the same afternoon. Thanks! :animal-pa Cathy, mom to :aimeeyork Sarge and :aimeeyork Lexi :animal-pa |

his age shouldn't be a problem. He's still young enough to bounce back quickly. Just make sure you have pre-op bloodwork done before surgery to make sure he can handle the anesthesia (this should be done before any surgery no matter the age). As for staying over night, personally i do not think its necessary for something as simple as a neuter. If there is staff at the hosp 24/7 and they insist he needs to stay then fine. however if no one is there over night, i would not leave him. he's better off at home where he can be monitored instead of in an empty hospital in a cage. Neuters on healthy dogs are just so simple and quick that its usually not necessary for them to stay in hospital for more then a few hours if they recover well. |
My vet told me that there are two kinds of drugs to put dogs under. (That he uses) One of the drugs they come to faster and one of them they take about 12 hours to come out of it. He said he likes to use the slower acting stuff because he feels that it is better for the dog because they are in pain the first few hours and they are still wanting to sleep and feeling less pain. He also wanted to keep him overnight because of this. I agreed but I didn't want to leave my baby overnight. When I got there at 8:00 am in the morning to pick him up he was like nothing ever happened to him no pain and no pain pills. I trust my vet to make the best decision for my dogs and he has never failed me yet:D |
There is an anesthetic protocol thread in the YT Library. And yes, what Kellie said. If they are staffed 24 hours and they want him to stay, then that's fine although I have no idea why they consider it necessary for an indoor dog... If nobody is there overnight, it is pointless and unsafe (unless again the dog is just going to be put out in the back yard all night and ignored or whatever which obv. is not the case here). |
Thanks all for your input. He has had pre-surgery blood test. My vet's office doesn't have someone there 24/7, and I'm afraid I don't have complete trust in him---sometimes I think he just wants the extra money. When he said he needed to stay overnight, I told him that I would rather pick him up the same day, but then this weekend I started doubting my decision. I knew I could get straight answers from yorkie talk. Thanks All! :animal-pa Cathy, mom to :aimeeyork Sarge and :aimeeyork Lexi :animal-pa |
