Newbie in need of advice ...
 

Hello All!

I'm new to the forum and looking for some help. I've been looking get a pup and have been doing some research about the process. I wanted to see if anyone could offer some advice on the situation I've found myself in.

One of my previous supervisors recommended this website:

As a great place to get a puppy. She's also recommended the site to a few other workers before me and tells me that her pup and the others are in good health. The thing that concerns me is that the site seems to go against a lot of the things I've read (ie many different breeds of dog for sale and it appears as though the yorkie for sale there is a little over a month old). She did tell me that you are allowed to see the parents. I'd like to be a responsible buyer and from what I'm hearing no one has really had any problems. Suggestions, comments, concerns?

I know it's hard trying to maintain patience when you are so eager to have a new little one. But taking your time to find a reputable breeder and the perfect pup for you is well worth it. Here are few things to look out for when searching for a breeder. These are some common red flags to be on the look out for and avoid.

* releasing pups at an extremely young age (reputable breeders do not place Yorkie pups until they are around 12 weeks old)
* having multiple litters in a short amount of time
* not placing pups on a s/n contract
* breeding dogs that vary greatly from the standard (which means that a good knowledge of the standard first is a must)
* not having specific health test performed on dogs and breeding stock (this means more than just "vet checked and healthy")
* a skimpy sales agreement/health guarantee that does not protect both you and the breeder, or not signed agreement at all
* breeding extremely small females (under 5 lbs)
* advertising "teacups" or "miniatures"
* breeding multiple breeds or mixing breeds for "designer dogs"
* USDA registered breeders

If anything, ask here for opinions first. Chances are, someone here will have experience with the breeder, or at the very least, can help you look for red flags you may have missed.

Thanks ya'll for all your great advice and words of wisdom! A lot of the things I've been reading suggest that you look for a breeder at a dog show. While this sounds like a fine idea is there an etiquette you should follow? I know there is a lot going on with shows but I've never actually been to one. I don't want to step on any toes or be completely ridiculous.

From losing Lexi, I would look up so many of these sites. My fears of getting a hurt again makes me suspicious of everything. When you look up a puppy site, make sure you do a separate search about the Reviews of the puppy site. I found such horror stories. :( Sorry I don't mean to scare you but it's best to be knowledgeable then to get hurt. All BBB.org helps too. They even have a story about Puppy Scams on the internet.
