Isn't it dangerous for them to be on furniture? When I got Rocco, the breeder told me absolutely no furniture - even sitting on a lap - it's too dangerous and she knew someone who's puppy broke his neck when he wiggled off a lap and jumped from the couch.:( She said beds are very dangerous for them too...they can easily break a bone even jumping from a moderate height. Yet, I see soooo many pictures and read so many stories about yorkies on furniture. Was my breeder just being overprotective when she warned me of this? FYI, Rocco does not go on any furniture, even on a lap. |
I never worried about Isabel and Harley jumping off the couch or chair. I tried to keep them from jumping off the bed, but they always did it with no problem. Then along comes Moses, jumps off the bed and breaks his leg! So, no more jumping off the bed, he won't even do it, he just waits for someone to put him down. But, he does jump off the couch and chair. They aren't that high (the bed is much higher than the couch). I don't know, I have never stopped them, I do not let them jump off anything higher than the couch, but then again, I never put them on anything higher than the couch (except the bed and then only when we go to bed for the night). I guess it's if you want to take the chance. Moses has not had any problem since he broke that leg; I still think there was something wrong with it when I got him, but I'll never know. |
I have never really worried about it - Levi can be pretty uncoordinated, but he manages to jump down from sofas and most furniture pretty well. He can be a bit skittish on beds and higher furniture, but he whimpers if he wants to get down and has never attempted any superman moves, which kind of surprises me because he is REALLY hyperactive. |
I do think it is, or I should say can be, dangerous, although I will tell you my dogs are all over my furniture. The younger they are, the more dangerous as they have little tiny fragile bones. There was a post on here several years back where somebody had their couch next to a chair and one of the yorkies would jump from the couch to the chair. I believe the person came home one day and found their yorkie had tried to make the jump, hit the chair wrong, I think broke its neck and had died. That has always stayed with me. There is a recent post where a yorkie jumped off a couch I think and broke the toes in its foot. So I think if you allow it you really need to be watchful and it is very important to get doggy stairs and train your puppy to go up and down them and not jump off the furniture. Good luck. |
My dogs have always been allowed on the furniture..I would not enjoy watching TV if they were laying on the floor..they are so small...I have a large ottoman at end of the bed for them to go up and down...but they do not sleep with us. It is a matter of taste...you are always going to hear horror stories that make people leery of things...a friend had a Yorkie die from getting it;s neck broke under a rocker chair..another slipped on her bathroom tile and broke his leg...you can protect just so much, like with our kids... |
I made a carpet covered ramp for Bridget to use to get on the couch or bed. If I want to hold her - I usually sit on the floor - because she IS a wiggle worm, and I have read the same types of horror stories. She sleeps in our bed and I wanted her to be able to get down to go potty if she needed! She is definately a jumper though and just Wednesday was diagnosed with grade 2 LP - so no more jumping for her! It's just my opinion, but if Rocco doesn't fuss about not being on the furniture - you're probably better off. But I guess it depends on the size of the puppy and the height of the furniture. I would think that a more "sturdy" puppy would be able to jump down better than a more delicate one. Bridget used to sleep in her own room at night with no problem. Her "daddy" decided he wanted her to sleep in our bed - now he and Bridget sleep like babies, and I don't sleep because I'm worried she'll fall off, jump down, or he'll roll over on her - but now she won't stay in her room. So 2 adults, 1 bed-hog Yorkie and 3 cats make for a pretty crowded bed! Not to mention the tongue up your nose at 4am!!! God I love her!!!! |
I think it depends on the size of the dog and the height of the furniture. I don't allow Sofia on anything except my bed, and she has her own stairs to get up and down safely. She has never even tried to jump, she even barks and whimpers to be carried down stairs. She is not a dare devil. |
I trained all of mine from day one to use the ramp or stairs to get up and down off the furniture. My 3 girls don't even know how to jump up on furniture. I also have padded step stools they can use. |
No furnitures? How will you leave if you do not have furnitures? or maybe we can learn the Japanese culture. Maybe we have to keep an eye when it comes to our yorkies, we should not allow them to jump up over a couch, chair, bed or anything |
I worry about Bailey all the time. She is still to little to jump on furniture but she does try to jump off. I do not give her the chance. If I think she is getting ready to jump, I place her on the floor. I do not leave her on the furniture if I am getting up on the floor she goes. I am sure this will change when she gets bigger and is able to jump up on the furniture herself. |
My two jump off all the furniture. I'm not worried as they are part Maltese and I think it makes them a little "sturdier", My bed is really high and I do not like them jumping off it eventhough they have a couple of times, but now they use the stairs for that. Maybe get some stairs and a couple of step stools like Patti suggested. |
Gypsy will jump on and off the couch. Hubby made a carpeted ramp for the bed which she uses to get up and usually down. I worry, but I know I can not watch her every second and she will prob do it when I am not watching. Luckily she has never been hurt. I watched her closely when she was younger but at 4 yrs old not as much. |
I have a 2 ramps at my place and 1 at my boyfriends that Bailey uses. He will still try to jump off things, but only at my bf's because he has two dogs, and he gets super hyper around them. It scares me a lot. |
I've never even thought about it. Roxie jumps on and off the couch and the recliner all the time...they are some of her favorite spots (she's laying on the couch right now!). She does not come upstairs where the bedrooms are at all, so I don't have to worry about the bed. Mine is very high and I don't think she would even be able to get up on it. |

I too have steps and a ramp - Cheri will fly over one set of steps when they're right next to her....Chanel will always use them |

If I had a tiny one, I'd definitely be concerned. They are so tiny and fragile, I would be vigilant and teach them to use stairs. Luckily, the tiny ones never appealed to me. I have a 7 lber. He's no giant, that's for sure, and when he's excited about playing he's not very coordinated either. I'll be on the floor with his favorite toy, and he'll jump on the couch. Don't know why he does it, but that's how it goes. He's had a few bumps here and there but none involved being on furniture. He bumps his head because he's so ball crazy, he doesn't watch where he's going sometimes. |
I agree with it depends on the age and size of the dog. When Teegy was little I would lift him up and tuck him in my housecoat or cardigan and I wouldn't encourage him onto the furniture, he would lay in his bed beside me. He would then sit at my feet if he wanted up for snuggles. I never allowed him onto my bed, he slept in his own beside mine, but one morning I woke up and he was asleep beside me on my pillow. He gets lots of exercise, so his little muscles have likely strengthened and he's now nine months and jumps up and down quite safely. I must add there is nothing sweeter than waking up to find his little face on the pillow next to me, I'm a big suck. |
When Maxine was young, she could actually jump up on the couce, and how she made it up I was not sure as her legs are tiny. Like us jumping up a 30 foot wall almost. WShe would also leap off if she heard a noise or the door bell. She looking like Superman....Now, she makes a sneexing noise to get picked up and placed on it. She has her own spot with her own blanket....We have a set of 3 Pillow steps that she uses to get down from the bed, but she usually just likes sleeping in her bed next to ours. Poor Carlo has never been allowed on anything....I still think he gets jealous when she is lifted and carried around, and then she attacks him when he walks by the couch for a pet....she sometimes tries to bite his face. A few times she lunged, bit and held on to his face skin, and he walked away carrying her. Glad he did not shake his big head and send her into a wall. Overall though, they get along great. |
Jackson's a big boy at 16lbs so I don't really worry about it. He's jumped on/off my bed, furniture, etc since he was probably 16 weeks old (it took him a bit longer to get up the courage to jump off the bed though!) I imagine if you have a little one, you have to take more precautions. |
Although I know it should be a big no-no and something I definitely discouraged at first, when Tatum was a couple years old she decided that the top of the recliner is a good perch. She can see more from there (lots of windows around the room) than when she's on top of the couch. The couch has a hard back though so there's a barrier to keep her from rolling off. I'm not sure how in the world she perches up on top of the recliner sometimes but I think she's part cat or something. We just have to be careful to look up there before plopping down on it. She's never fallen off but it does give me the willies sometimes. |
Addyson is 5 lbs. and jumps off the furniture and the bed. I had stairs for both the bed and the couch, but she wouldn't use them. I have a big doggie bed on the floor at the end of my bed, so that helps with the her landing when she jumps off the bed. She loves to jump off things!! |
I have yet to hear of a breed that suffers more broken legs as a puppy than Italian Greyhounds. The rule I've always heard with that breed is they should NEVER jump off anything they can't jump on. I followed that rule with Lizzie, but she was already nine months when I got her and hasn't really gotten larger. I also don't think she was quite the Kamikaze puppy some can be. |

Out of all my dogs only my yorkie who happen to be the tiny one does all the jumping everywhere. As much as I try to train her to not jump down she still does. She my lil' catwomen seriously. |

Really anything could happen at any time and I try to take as many safety precautions as possible with them but I am not gonna stop all their fun ;) |
Last night Boomer and Bailey were running up and down the stairs. I went to see what they were doing and about that time Bailey jumped over the last 2 stairs. She liked to have scared me to death. I put the baby gate up on the stairs now she can't go up an down them and that is just fine by me. She is way to little to be trying to be a little dare devil. |
There is risk, but they can only be protected from just so much. I would literally have to be by Ellie's side 24/7 for her not to do this. I discourage walking and jumping from chair to couch and sitting on the back of the recliner, but otherwise she is allowed. |
I think Zeke is part mountain goat. He weighs 8 pounds now but has always been a climber and a jumper. He is very agile. He likes to climb as high as he can get. If you try to block him, he will figure out a way to get to where he wants to go by either climbing over it or knocking it down. |
