Tips on Potty training Some Yorkie's can be more difficult then other breeds to house train. But they can be trained The key word Is patience, Understanding and lots of encouragement. Start with potty training your yorkie right from the beginning. Remember Puppy’s bladders are very very small and need to be emptied quite often. Take your puppy out every 30 minutes or when he/she wakes up from it's nap, after vigorous play, Right after it's eaten, and the very fist thing in the morning. As soon as you get home. Right before bed. Don't expect the puppy to be trained in a few hours or even a week, it takes time. Good Luck. glad to have you here. |
I see your new so first let me say Hello and Welcome! This is a great sight full of information that is beyond priceless. The above advice was very good and might I add to patience to add lots of love. We actually had potty parties that involved treats in the beginning and that was helpful although it still took time. |
Hi and welcome. You don't mention what method you're trying. I tried my male to go outside. He's 7 1/2 months now and completely trained. In the beginning I took him out every 30 minutes. I don't remember him ever NOT going even though that seems pretty frequent now. I will tell you that Trace does not "tell" me he has to go now, except go to the door. I still pretty much just take him out on a regular basis. |
Taking out my little Rowdy (now 8 mo old and completely potty trained since 5 months) very very frequently was my method. I must have spent half my life in the yard during those months saying over and over, "Let's go potty" "Let's go potty" "Let's go potty". I still find myself saying that when I want him to go potty before we are go out in the car. When he was about 4 months old we got a doggy door so he could go in and out at will, and when he started using it, he got soooo much better with potty training. It did take him a few weeks to "remember" to go out the door to potty, but eventually he did. Also, many many people on this board complain about their little ones having memory laspes (suddenly having accidents after being completely trained). I thought that my sweet little Rowdy would NEVER do that to me - but he did. A couple of weeks ago it rained, and although he went out to pee, he started pooping in the house! I nearly died AND I never saw him do it so I couldn't do any correction at the time of the accident. Actually, many people advise to ignore the accidents and praise praise praise when they do go outside. I guess that is what I did since I didn't see it happen. I think using LOTS of praise when they go outside is the best thing that you can do. And take them outside as much as you possibly can. I know some people use treats when they potty outside, but I couldn't do that with Rowdy since he was such a picky eater. Good luck! :) |
