Groom-a-phobic yorkie I have a serious issue with my little Trixie Leigh! When she was about 8 months old I took her to a reputable pet store with "supposedly" a great grooming staff...Her appt was at 11am and by 3pm still no word, so I contacted the store and they were very short and just said they weren't done yet...So I did what any concerned mother would do...I went up there...only to find out that somehow or another they cut the pad on her foot...I had to pay 60.00 for the grooming experience and then take her to the e-vet and she had to have 2 stitches in her little foot....needless to say she is absolutley petrified when she goes to any groomer, trust me I have tried just about everyone in northeast louisiana....I can brush her coat, and her teeth and give her baths, but you break out the scissors or electric razor and she flips out....I've even tried giving her "ACE" its like a puppy nerve pill and it doesn't phase her...Any help would be great?!!? |
That just makes me mad! How could they have cut her foot and not call to tell you! You're basically starting over with her. You're going to have to teach her it's ok. Start with picking out the most delicious thing for a treat, and only use it for this purpose. Go very slowly with her, don't get frustrated. I'd be scared of grooming supplies too if I required stitches. Take out your grooming supplies, show them to her, put them away, and then treat her for being a good girl. When she is calm and ok with you simply taking out the supplies, move on to allowing her to sniff them. Then, touch her with the scissors, don't cut just touch her. When she's ok with that, move on to the clippers. Let her sniff it. When that's ok, show it to her, turn it on. Leave it on for a second, then treat her. I think you get the idea of where I'm headed. You'll have a shaggy puppy for a while, but I think it's worth it to get her over her fear. She's going to be groomed her entire life, it's best if you work with her now. I have a shy, fearful dog, so trust me this works. He now sleeps when I'm cutting his hair. |
I am sorry that your baby had a terrible time with her grooming. It sounds like maybe she is still scare from the experience. :( Maybe try grooming very slowly with lots of treats just to get her used the each thing. What I mean is maybe just get her used to being up where you groom her, then combed/brushed out, then try cutting a small section. Take it very slowly until she feels comfortable with every step. It may take awhile but it sounds she's just really afraid. Best of luck. |

The only compensation that I rec'd was they offered 1lb of treats off the treat bar for free, but most of those treats are bigger than my baby's head.....Thank you so much for the advice! last night was the first time I was able to brush her without her trying to bite the brush! She is still very wary of clippers and scissors, but maybe with lots more practice she'll warm up to it! |
