Marking territory and neutering..need HELP
 
Cooper is 6 months old and I have noticed that he has started marking. My intention was to get him neutered before now but we have had an illness/death in the family and time and finances have not allowed me to. After I found that he is marking my curtains and other things inside my house I've just GOT to do it. My question is...will neutering him help with the marking? I've got some belly bands ordered but really don't won't to keep him in belly bands all the time. I really want to train him not to do this. I haven't caught him in the act inside to get onto him but should I be correcting him if I see him marking on walks outside?

It will take from weeks to months after neuter for the hormones to go down. You can keep him from marking by using constant vigilance. Marking is one reason I believe in early neutering as well as keeping down aggression. I'm sorry about your loss.:(

No, don't correct him when he marks outside. There is a difference with marking outside and marking inside, you want him to think outside is ok. Neutering will help, but to "cure" the behavior, it takes training. There are two ways to use belly bands:
1-put it on them and forget about it:
In this manner, belly bands are a band aid, they just cover the problem. The problem still exists.
2-use it as a training tool:
In combination with training, the belly band helps because it keeps you sane. I'm serious! You don't have to worry about trying to swoop him up every time he lifts his leg. It helps keep you calm and anger free through the process, which makes training so much easier. Plus, if there is no smell of urine in the house, he's less likely to mark.

I've taken all of my rugs off of the hardwood floors, I'm washing curtains and plan on having my carpets steam cleaned. Most of my house is hardwoods but the bedrooms and I have found some spots that he has marked on the carpets also. I'm praying that all of the cleaning along with having him neautered will help. I didn't go through this with my previous Yorkie because he was neutered before he started hiking. I had no idea it would be this bad!!!

Use Nature's Miracle. That stuff is awesome! Spray the soiled areas, leave 5 mins for it to work it's magic, then dab it away. It has enzymes to really break down the pee. Just because you can't smell it, doesn't mean he can't. That's why I use this stuff, it really eliminates all smells.

Even my girl marks outside!:D She just never does it inside.

I had a little guy that did the same thing marked everything in the house furniture, beds and all and the neutering did not help. I had to rehome him as my landlord was very upset.

I got another and had him neutered before he started lifting his leg to use the bathroom and he still squats and has never marked thank god.

Jaxon wasn't neutered until last Dec. He was 5 1/2 years old & he has stopped all marking in the house! YEAH! There is hope for yours too!

Neutering alone is not going to stop a behavior. Neutering eliminates the hormones that drives the behavior, and it's not instant either. It takes weeks for the testosterone to be out of there system. After that's gone, the behavior remains like a bad habit. You teach them it's not ok. They don't figure it out on their own unless you tell them.

I would get him neutered asap. The more established the behavior becomes, the less likely neutering will stop it. After he is neutered you will have to leash him to you so you can catch him in the act and correct him.

I have an appointment for his neutering next Wed and it can't get here fast enough..lol. I was also leaving him with free roam of 3 rooms while I was gone to work. I thought that was working out fine until I found evidence that it wasn't. Anyway, I have now started crating him which I really hate to do. I just hope that I can get this turned around. My husband is very upset and he says we will have to get rid of him if we can't get it under control. We don't see eye to eye on that ...no matter what he does I won't consider giving him up. He is family to me and I love him!! I lost a Yorkie back in February (death) and can't stand the thought of having to give this one up. I'll be working very hard to get it corrected!

Put a belly band on him....I use those at my mom's- she has new cream colored carpet & I want to be sure he doesn't mark there!

You'll get this corrected! All you need is determination, and a eagle eye when you're home. You're probably going to have to crate him while your not there to ensure success. Or an ex-pen, which is what I prefer.
