New Puppy and Resident Dog Need advice on resident dog's reaction to new puppy. We just got a new puppy from the same Dam and Sire we got our Biggie's Smalls from. Biggie is now 3 years old and the puppy is almost 9 weeks old. We are super excited. The introduction occurred 2 days ago at a park Biggie is not familiar with. They sniffed each other and there was no aggression but my Biggie lost interest in the puppy within seconds. He was not interested in her. He hasn't been aggressive towards her but each time she goes near him he walks away. If he is laying with us and we bring her up to lay with us he immediately gets up and walks away. It is kind of sad to watch the puppy want to be with him and play with him and he wants nothing to do with her. She loves to follow him around. Is this normal? Is there anything we are not doing correctly or anything we "Should" be doing? We have not scolded him and each time he lets her smell him we praise him. We have also made sure to give him plenty of attention to ensure he knows he is still loved very much. |
Sounds like you are doing great. in time I'm sure he'll open up |
When she's had all of her shots, you could take them both for walks together. Be sure to give him his treats and food first, so he doesn't feel like he's been knocked down a peg. Greet him first, too. He's jealous, so give it some time and eventually they will become friends. Taking them both out together and doing things together will help, but you should also give him some time out and away so he doesn't feel hurt. |
