Yorkies & Cockatiels Hi all! This is my first time posting & I'd really like to know if anyone has both birds & a Yorkie. I have 5 Cockatiels and come Sunday, I will have a 2-3 year old Yorkie that someone doesn't want anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice they'd like to give? I'm listening and thank you! |
Hi! welcome to yt! ummm my friend has a macall and quakers who live with her yorkies. the quaker parrot doesnt have alot to do with the dogs, but the macall gets right on the floor with them. it's really neat to hear her stories about them. i dont know anything about birds, but just wanted to let you know that i do know of someone who has birds and dogs living together...good luck! |

I have a Yorkie and a Cockateil (Aussie). The only advice I have is don't let your dog eat your bird. Trixie would snatch Aussie up in a minute if she had the chance. On the other hand, I had a parakeet for a long time, got a puppy (a Beagle-Rotweiler mix...hunting in that blood) and the dog loved the bird...let him drink out of his bowl, bite his ears. I guess it depends on the dog. Good luck. |

None of my babies are caged. They do have their own room though (it used to be my bedroom but I took the smaller one with the view of the house next door). Works well though cause I spend more time in their room than I ever did when it was my bedroom! I don't know why this lady doesn't want her Yorkie anymore. I know she has 2 other dogs but that's about it. All my Cockatiels came from unwanted homes too. |
I have 3 yorkies and a parakeet. The bird isn't fond of the yorkies and the yorkies look like they want to nibble on the bird. But, Rex's cage is up high enough that I don't have to worry about him. |

Good luck :) |
i dont have any birds i really think it depends on the dog and if its raised with them if brownie got ahold of a outside bird he would eat it |
We had our cockatiel "Jolly" long before we got our furkids, she rides on Dounia's (lab) back, she loves Chelsey and talks to her a lot, she calls the dogs for me, but shes not fond of Chanel at all, Chanel tried to nibble at her once, so now when Jolly is out of her cage, i carry Chanel in my frontcarrier so i can watch her lol Just be careful with your furkids and the bird, i think its instinct to hunt them, they will get used to the bird ;) |
2 Attachment(s) Do these answer your question? Our birds and dogs get along great. We've never had a problem with any of them. My wife advises to start out slow, though. Introduce the birds one at a time, and give all the animals a chance to calm down between introductions. |

I dont have birds, we have hamsters and 1 yorkie. I wanted to welcome you to our Yorkie family. :) |
We have a cockatiel and a quaker, my yorkie wants to eat him and barks and them all the time.... I think he would eat them if he got a chance... I take the quaker out a lot trying to get him used to him.... I just am very careful! |

I don't know about Yorkies and cockatiels, but our mutt reluctantly accepted that Fred (son's cockatiel) was part of the family and would have to be tolerated even when Fred was walking down the middle of the narrow hallway forcing the dog to wait for him to make his slow waddling way from one room to the next or when the bird would finally get airborn and dive at him from above. He never tried to attack it. |
Hi and welcome! I have a cockatiel now and if all goes well I will have a puppy this spring. So I'm afraid I don't have any advice, but I am really glad you posted this and wish you the best of luck. |
I have an aviary full of small birds...finches, canaries, etc. Maddie, my yorkie, wants to get those birds bad! I also have a lovebird that inhabits the lower part of the aviary and Maddie teases him and barks at him. I think if she ever had the chance to get him, he'd bite her in the nose. Once she got one of my old canaries in her mouth, but dropped him before she hurt him. I'm not sure what stopped her from biting down...my screaming probably. The bird played dead because we thought he was dead, but suddenly he came to life again. Anyway, yorkies have a strong desire to hunt...so I would be very careful with your yorkie and the birds! |

Yes, Yorkies get along great with birds. Well at least Princess is great with them. We have three furbabies Princess (Yorkie), Poncho (Chihuahua), & Mandy (Rottie) But we also have five birds, two African Greys, one Cockatiel, and two small Parrots. They all get along great, but one of the Greys learned how to Bark this week, so it's kind of nuts around here. :) :) |
Muffin wasn't raised around birds - other than the outside kind. :D There was a pet store that we visited that had birds of all kinds and the screeching scared her to death. She was shaking so bad. I felt terribly sorry for her. I tried numerous times to take her there and show them to her so she wouldn't be scared of them to no avail. She couldn't take it. I would do a test visit with that little doggie before bringing it permanently into the home. They are all different, but since it is 2 - 3 years of age, that little doggies personality is already formed and you wouldn't want it to live in daily fear. Just a thought... :) |
