Crying in his sleep.
 
I have had Nikki for 3 months. His owner had a stroke and couldn't keep him. She adopted him from a Yorkie Rescue 2 1/2 years ago. He was found on the streets of Chicago, extremely thin and his teeth were rotted to the bone. Nikki has known me for about 9 months so he easily attached to me when I took him in. The thing is is he cries in his sleep. Usually I will hear him a couple of times a week for a minute or two. Recently he has been crying for longer periods of time. I had mentioned this to his owner and she said he cried in his sleep when he was with her. I feel so bad. My girls sometimes seem like they are having a dream but have never cried like this. Does anyone else's yorkie cry in their sleep? It seems like he is remembering bad times or am I just putting human emotions to this. Thanks

Mine will whimper sometimes, usually accompanied by moving paws, like they're running. They're dreaming.

If you think he's in distress or remembering bad things, maybe gently stroke him and talking soothingly to him. It will wake him up, or at least disturb the sleep pattern enough to break him out of it.

With his unknown past, a little reassurance can't be a bad thing.

They do dream, so possibly he is having bad or sad dreams. I think I'd wake him. Twice in Kacee's life I've heard her howl the most mournful howl I've ever heard and I woke her both times and that was it. I've never heard her cry. That's so sad about Nikki. They may just be dreams that don't really mean anything.

Thanks. I have been waking him gently, but he seems so out of it when I wake him. The other night he cried on and off all night. My others have had dreams where they make a noise and move their paws. But with Nikki the crying sounds so sad and he is not moving at all. He doesn't seem in pain, but he has been losing weight even though eating well. So I am going to have him checked out again.

I don't mean to alarm you but this is that Truman did the last month of so that he was with us. He actually cried in his sleep :( Now it makes me wonder if he was in pain. He never showed any signs of pain when he was away but he did have doggy dementia. Poor little guy I think you should take him back to the vet.

Mia, our Chihuahua used to do that when we first got her, and we would gently stroke her and use a soothing voice. She would either wake up or sleep without crying. But I agree with megansmomma. Take Nikki to the vet for a thorough checkup, especially if he's older.

Nikki is estimated to be 15 years old. I think he is showing signs of doggie dementia. I find him in the laundry room, sometimes he looks like he doesn't recognize me. Just the last 2 nights I woke to him just standing on the bed. Normally he sleeps right next to me and never moves during the night. He is showing some of the signs my Pom was when she had Cushing's. He is drinking more, eating more, losing weight and peeing more. He had a complete vet exam with blood work, all normal, 2 months ago. I have never had a dog this old so I am guessing they can go down hill pretty quickly. I will take him in and recheck him and also get thyroid panel done. Thanks for the input.

Poor little guy. Truman use to wander the house at night and make the saddest moaning sounds. :( Patti you are doing such a great job taking care of Nikki. Thank you for caring so much. :hug:

Wow 15 years! What a life Nikki has had. Could he be missing his old owner??(I'm sure you take great care of him)
It sounds like what my Cocker started doing before I learned that had dementia. He'd cry at night and sometimes get mad at me as if he didn't recognize me and bark, then hide. He'd howl and cry all the time in the end. After the vet sad there was nothing else left to do I decided to let him cross the bridge.
You are wonderful for taking in an older dog.

Patti, my rescue Scottie cries in his sleep almost eveynight. And loud enough to wake the Yorkies. They just love him. He was about to be euthinized when Scottie Rescue saved him. He also runs in his kennel if he hears any type of noise. I think they do remember!

Thanks it must have something to do with his prior life. I feel so bad. All I can do is love him up and reassure him he is safe.
