Yorkie with Border Collie? Thinking about getting a male Yorkie, but curious about him being hurt by my larger dog (year 1/2 old hyper border collie). She get's along with my parents border collie and their late welsh corgi. She seemed to play more rough with the border collie almost ignore the welsh corgi. Curious if anyone else had other hyper/rough playing dogs (she broke her leg as a puppy and had multiple surgeries and had to be caged for about 2 months and it seems to made her a little more I'll say apprehensive towards men and other dogs until she get's calmed down (with people it takes about 10-15 minutes before she will approach)). Looking for suggestions from others who have dealt with introducing the Yorkie to other dogs that feel the house is their territory. :) I've had many dogs and introduced many to one another in the past but never been worried about one being hurt as I am with the small size of the yorkie. Much appreciated! |
Hi, I have two twelve year old Border Collies (Max and Annie). I recently adopted three puppies, a Yorkie (Cocoa), a Chinwa (Leo) and a Chihuahua (Pablo). The pups are all around ten months old now. The collies will tolerate the small ones, but since the collies are a bit elderly they get a little annoyed at the pups and will growl at them if they get too close. The Yorkie in particular loves to jump up at Max's face to lick his mouth. He doesn't like it one bit, but the most he will do is give her a warning growl, and she will back off. Now that we have had them all together for a few months they all just seem to go about their business. The older dogs more or less ignore the pups. The collies love to run and play fetch. Its so much fun to watch the little ones try to keep up with them! It seems to me that puppies seem to eventually learn their boundaries with older dogs, however it might take some time. Hope this helps :) Cocoa's Mom |
I also have a Border and a Border/Sheltie the Border doesn't really like the pup at all but will tolerate him he is 7 years old. The border/sheltie 3 years old took about a month to get where he would play with the pup. I still have to watch so they don't play to ruff and hurt Cooper who is now 5 months and 6 1/2 pounds. Go for it but watch them close when you first get the Yorkie it only takes a second for them to get hurt. I never left them alone together and I made sure that I always knew where cooper was at all times when the dogs were in the house together. |
My little sister has a Border mix named Lucy who tolerates my Yorkie Sakura when they are over. They do play pretty good and under supervision. But Sakura is forever jumping up and pawing at Lucy's face and by about the end of the day she is fed up with Sakura but the next morning or next time they see each other they are fine and playing together again. But also Lucy is only a couple months older than Sakura and has pretty much only met little dogs so I don't think she plays that rough. |
