Yorkie hopping on back legs Hi YT. I have a 9 month Yorkie who I love to pieces. When we are out walking I find that she does a hopping thing with her back feet. It's both sides so I don't think it's the Patella Luxation. It usually happens when she's walking at a speed that isn't quite a run, but faster than a walk. She can run full speed without problems, jump without problems, and no pain in her back legs that I can tell. Has anyone else experienced this? |
I'm not positive I fully understand what you are describing, but I do know that mine spends a lot of time sitting on her hiney or standing up on her hind legs just so she can see things better. Also, when she is running through grass that is a bit tall for her, she looks like a bunny hopping. Perhaps that is what you are describing?:) |
A hopping gait like a bunny can be a sign of luxating patellas. It's very quick and easy for your vet to check her knees. It is done by palpitation, not xrays. |
Welcome to YT. :) Sure sounds like he needs to be looked at by the vet to see if it is LP. All 3 of mine have some degree of this and one of the things that my vet asked about is if they kick out like you are describing. They never have pain and almost always act fine. |
Thanks for the feedback. I don't think its LP but I guess it would be better to know that. My dog walker thinks it's just part of her quirky personality.:aimeeyork |
Hi, my male yorkie Alfie started to do this at about the same age, but only on one leg, he'd do a little catch up skip when walking at a fast pace. I was worried about LP too so took him to the vet who could find nothing wrong, his knee caps are fine, but I would say its probably best to gets an all clear from your vet. |
Sofia does this too. Wet said nothing wrong, she's just try to keep up. |
Thats Vet not wet, cant type today. |
bunny hop My Sophie was big at bunny hopping when she was smaller. Now she is a bit bigger (3.5lbs) and 8 mos old she doesn't do it as much. However, She has been hiking up her left rear, acts lame and sometimes just keeps it slightly off the floor. Our regular vet said her knees are fine, but I don't think so, but I sure wish he was. I had heard that the bunny hopping was something that those with LP did alot.:(:( I am very afraid she does have LP. |
I'm not really sure I"m understanding the question, but Uni will walk on her back legs like a person when we are not walking fast enough and she ends up pulling on the leash. |
