Bell training? I posted this on the training board...but it didn't seem too active over there, so I figured I would try here. We repainted the front door yesterday and bought a kickplate to put over the bottom of the door. Now we want to try to train Roxie to jingle some bells to go out instead of scratching the crap out of the front door and the surrounding moldings. I bought some jingly bells and tied them to a ribbon. I know not to hang them directly on the door knob, but next to the door. I don't really know how to start training her, though. Right now I have a baby gate up so she doesn't go scratch at the door, but it's a real pain, as it's blocking the front hallway. Anyone know how I can get started? Any help appreciated! |
I too am going to try the bell training soon. Farrah only has the kitchen to roam in and is not near a door to let me know when she has to go out. Also I know she would use the jingly bells as a toy. So I bought the "Tell Bell". It is like a bell on a service counter. It is stationery on the floor so less likely to become a toy. The nice thing is that it comes with directions for use. For you, I would jingle the bells every time you take your furbaby out. That was they will associate the bell with potty. And use your "go potty" command as you go. Good luck. |
I started by ringing the bell every time we went out. I would say "potty" every time I rang the bell. After a week or so, I started touching her paw to the bell each time we went outside, then praised and treated her each time. I think it took a couple weeks, then she started associating it with going out to potty. But be forwarned, when they first learn it, they love to ring it every five minutes just to watch you jump up and go let them out, lol!!! She had me jumping up a LOT, lol. They do get used to it though, especially when you keep it to only going out for potty when praising for using the bell. Good luck!! |
I could not love the Tell Bell more! Cooper loves it too. Here's a recent thread about training using the Tell Bell http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-training.html Cooper has been using it successfully for about a year and 1/2. |
