Grooming Question My little Maxwell is very hyper, and I wonder how the groomer is able to trim him. Someone suggested that the groomer may give him a relaxer. Does any one have any input as to if you think this could be true? |
How old is your pup? I have never taken Uni to the groomers bc I know she would not behave for them. So I just learned to groom her myself. You have to start training your pup before your first grooming visit, so he knows what is to be expected of him. Like touch his paws without trying to cut his nails, flip him on his back, look in his ears, etc all while praising him and keep a calm voice. If you are nervous he will feed of your nervousness. I wouldn't suggest using a relaxer btw, unless you talk to your vet first. |
Well he is a year old. I do NOT want the groomer to give him anything, but my dad cannot understand how Max can behave for the groomer since he is so hyper. I was just wondering if groomers do give dogs pills for that? |
I don't think groomers do it, but vets can prescribe something for them if they feel it's necessary. I would not allow a groomer to make that decision. What have you been doing as far as his grooming up till now? |
Well, I bring him to the same lady on a regular basis, but she tends to keep him for a very long period of time, and I know she does not groom too many dogs. My dad was thinking she gave Max a relaxer when he gets there and has to wait for it to wear-off (explaining why it takes FOREVER for him to be groomed). I was just wondering if they were allowed to purchase such medication. I would hope she is not doing this... |
Oh, I see. Yea groomers do keep them almost all day sometimes. I would talk to your vet about it. Also sometimes groomers can be a bit mean to the dogs too. Why don't you learn to groom yourself? It's really not that hard. You save money and it's a bonding experience with your pup. Also you can do one thing one day, another thing another day. Not as stressful on the dog. Is he in a puppy cut or full coat? |
Have you asked her flat out? Perhaps she takes her time with your little guy because that's what HE needs. You know, wash & dry...let him rest. Do his ears...rest. Nails...rest and so on. Personally, I'd prefer a groomed that took her time vs one who rushed through. I'd also ask how your little guy behaves while he's there. You might be very surprised to find out that he does cooperate for her. My old golden would never let me do her nails or ears without a struggle. Yet we found a groomed who just had a way with my big baby. For her, she would sit and let her do whatever needed to be done. It's also never been my experience that a groomer would give the dog a sedative without having it prescribed by your vet and you administering it. For one, they can't buy them legally. And two, they wouldn't want to run the risk of having something go wrong if they were to be the one to give it. |

They learn whats expected of them and just like kids behave better in some ways for a groomer then they do for us. My little girl now has the routine down. If your groomer is giving your dog anything orally I'd be changing groomers. IF theres not a law against that there sure should be. That just sounds unethical to me. I wouldn't tolerate it for my dogs. I certainly wouldn't pay someone to drug my dog. Just my two cents |
I used to work in a groomers and only one of the dogs (a Lhasa Apso) was ever given a drug to calm her and that was one the owner obtained from the vets and gave herself. There's no way we would have given a dog anything but I don't know if things are different over there. We never had problems with the dogs. One or two younger ones were a bit nervous and jumpy but they soon settled down after a big fuss from us. The one which did have to be doped once came in having spat out her pill. That was no fun for her or us. She only came in for a bath and grooming but she really went ballistic even being groomed at home. We had to muzzle her (she was a biter) and did the best we could but we couldn't let her get too stressed. I always do my own dogs at home. It's not difficult to do a basic puppy cut and saves a lot of money and stress in the long run. |
I groomed for decades...MANY were wild with their owners, but knew when they came to my house to be groomed, they were expected to behave for me and most did..some were still a bit craZy and it took extra time..but in time they learned. I used to take a hold of their head in my hands...look them in the eye and tell them I was the alpha bitch, in a firm voice. Never had a Yorkie who did not enjoy visiting...they knew they got chicken as a treat when it was over...and they got to play with a new toy...and the owner wanted to know if I drugged them..why did they allow me to groom them and they could not..you know how kids act up for parents and not others..LOL |
