Afraid of stairs Kingston, my 1y5m old yorkie is scared of our house stairs! He won't go up or down the stairs and in order for him not to use the restroom inside the house I have to carry him. I've tried laying down treats in each stair, but he'll go up 2 and then start crying and wimpering. I'm running out of ideas. How can I have him conquer the stairs so I won't have to carry him up and down just to go on walks! Thanks! |
Ooh, my Milly used to be terrified of stairs too. Think of it as a huge mountain for them to climb. Teaching them to go up is easier than back down, I remember after teaching Milly to climb stairs, she would run up, then cry until I carried her back down. That lasted a few days until we got the down-the-stairs method worked out. Treats is a great idea, but try taking it one step at a time... literally! The way I did it was to sit on the bottom step with a treat, then when she came up, treat, then go down a step and encourage her back down a step. Try that a few times, then try going up two stairs next time, then back down two stairs. Then three, then four, after 3 or 4 you might find you're able to skip a couple. I think it was after about 6 or 7 stairs that she "got it", and since then there's been no stopping her. It took a few days though, 5 minutes a few times a day (bearing in mind how terrifying and stressful it might be for your pooch!) |
They are so tiny, take one step at at time. |
My Roxie doesn't like stairs either...and she's not a puppy. She will go down the 3 stairs to get off the front porch when we go out for walks, but that's it. She will not go upstairs to the bedrooms in the house, or follow us downstairs to the basement. It's actually a good thing, though, because I learned that I can leave her out of the playpen when I am out of the house, as I know she will stay on the main floor of the house. |
My Charlie is 4 months old and just started going up the stairs. He waits for me to carry him down. I sort of figured he'd do it in his own time, though maybe he'll never want to go down on his own. |
