Spaying Mee-kah tomorrow! Okay, so i am spaying Mee-kah tomorrow. She has been in heat since March 29. Just yesturday i picked her up to cary ger and my shirt was staineed with blood spots. I called today to make her the appointment and its set for tomorrow at 8:15. They told me to keep her away from food starting 9:00 a.m. How about water? Is she allowed to drink water??? I am so nervous, i am dropping her off and i am supposed to have her picked up around 1 or so. Will she be okay? Will she be in alot of pain? Basically, what should i do to keep her conforable? She is my little princess and i want her to be okay. Next saturday i am getting my male dog neutered, so i will already know what to expect. I was going to get both of them done tomorrow, BUT i rather take care of one and give them my full attention before i get the other one feeling under the weather. :) |

Best wishes to your little Mee-kah for a successful surgery and a quick recovery. Please call your vet to clarify how long to hold water because I think it is 2-3 hours before surgery. I have boys, but I would imagine some of the same post-op instructions apply. Keep the dog quiet, no running or jumping or other strenuous activity for at least a few days. My vet advised taking it easy for 10 to 14 days, which is tough because they tend to bounce back so quickly. No baths for a couple of weeks. Did you have pre-op blood work done? |
Good luck and im sure she will be fine i would not worry so much you might stress her out |
I think a little water is fine so long as she's not gulping it down. Just make sure afterwards you keep her quiet and not jumping. We were told for about 2 weeks after Maggie's spay. Maggie was in a bit of pain the first night so we gave her some pain meds and she went to sleep. She was okay but quiet the next day as well. I kept her in her crate the first night to keep Hot Rod away from her. Best of luck! |
Aww thanks all for your replys. She has not had blook work done, can this be bad? I will keep her relaxed today and tomorrow. I am seperating in different rooms and everything so she does not get overly excited. :). I will keep you all posted as to her status. |

Tell your other little one to keep mommy busy and the day will fly by. Looking forward to your updates. |
Thanks Maximo :). I just dropped her off, i went crazy yesturday and bathed her, played with her brushed her. I put her in her crate around 10 last night and this morning around 7 took her out. She was so excited when she saw me, i kept cool and nonchilant so that she did not notice anything. When i put her in the car with me, she started to cry. Maybe she was crying because Sharpie was not ther or daddy. She kept jumping from one chair to another and crying. When we got to the clinic, they took her in because they wanted me to fill out some forms. I had them give her a booter shot too so that i dont have to take her back in a couple of weeks and they told me they would cut her nails etc. I am do to pick her up at 1pm. It is 10:20. I came to the Office to work for a couple of hours to see if time goes by quicker and left Sharpie with daddy. Now is just a waiting game. I told them to call me for anything. Will keep you updated :). Thanks once again. (I feel like i gave my child to some doctors and left her all alone :() but ill be okay. :) and praying for my little Mee-kah! |
Wishing Mee-kah the very best today and I hope mommie can be strong, too.:) |
One of the scariest things in my life was when I took the kids in to be fixed. The anesthesia part scared me to tears. I was a nervous wreck, so I can truly relate to where you are, mentally and emotionally. But they were OK ... they were fine in a few days, right back to normal. Your pups will be OK, too. Let us know when you know, OK? |
I hope the time goes fast and you have your little Mee-kah back in your arms soon. It is so scary to take these little ones in for surgery, and such a huge relief when it's all behind you! |
I wish you and Mee-Kah the best of luck. You're lucky you get to bring her home on the same day! I had to keep my baby there over night and that was, without a doubt, the worst part of the whole experience. She will probably be a little loopy for the first 24-36 hours after bringing her home and her breath may stink from the anesthesia so you need to keep an eye on her. You should get a surgical collar or inflatable ring to prevent her from chewing at the stitches. Keep her off of couches and chairs or anything she can jump off of. Make sure she takes it very easy for the next two weeks. You may want to keep her in her crate or if you have a pet stroller, keep her in that. The stroller is wonderful because it limits her activity and you can wheel her around with you as you go about your business; this will comfort her being able to be close to you and you can have piece of mind being able to keep an eye on her. She'll be back to her old self in a couple days and that is the dangerous part. Activity is your enemy and that is where something like the stroller comes in handy. You don't want the stitches to be ripped. My Lola did wonderfully for the first week and a half and then a few days before she was due to get the stitches out, she decided to do something she had never done before and follow my fiance by jumping over her baby gate! She ripped her stitches and even though it was almost healed, they ripped badly enough that she bought herself two more weeks of recovery time! Luckily, when you get your male fixed you won't have as many worries. Neutering is not major surgery the way spaying is and while there will be some recovery time, it won't be nearly as daunting! Be prepared for a lot of kisses when you pick your baby up (if she's not too out of it)! Overall, the experience is probably more stressful for you than your babies, but it is well worth it! Lola and I will be thinking of you and Mee-kah! |

I know what you mean about feeling like you are handing over your child. My vet's office jokingly offered to sedate me because I was crying so hard. Don't be surprised if your baby comes back greasy and slimy. I don't know what is used during surgery, but the pups seem to come back really dirty. Then you have to fight the urge to give them a bath. |
