Does My Dog Have Any Sense Of Time? I've always heard that dogs have no sense of time. Does my dog know if I'm gone for 5 minutes or 5 hours? Does he know if i'm gone for 5 days? Does he know the difference? Usually when i leave the house, i can come home 5 seconds later and he's just as thrilled to see me as if it was 5 hours later. |
Hmmm... I don't know exactly. I mean, when I've gone on vacation and left for over 4 days, and I get home, he goes absolutely BIZZERRKK! when I walk in the door. He's always really excited to see me when I get home, even I left for 10 minutes, but never like he is when I'm gone for over 2 nights. I went to Colorado a few months ago for 5 nights and Jackson stayed at my dads house. When I got home, he literally LEAPED over their TWO dogs and did like a half-spin in the process and jumped into my arms, LOL. He never greets me quite like that after being gone for a few minutes. |
I think they do know the difference, mine do at least. If I run out for a few minutes they are fine when I get home, when I am gone all day, they greet me in a much more excited manner. And when I go on vacation and am gone for over a week, they are very very crazy when I come back. |
What a good question and I wish I knew for certain the answer. If I am gone more than an hour or so, my dogs are more excited when I return, than if I'm gone just 10-15 minutes. When we are away overnight or vacationing, we take them with us, so I don't have extended lengths of time being away from them to know if they would react differently. |
I think they do and I also think they know what day of the week it is. On Saturday, Sam is up and ready to GO GO GO GO and will do whatever it takes to get me out of bed. During the week, he snuggles closer. |
I think they do. If I'm gone for a few minutes and I see them they are just waggin their tails, like hey what's up? Once we were gone for near 2 weeks. When we came home Uni was waiting for us on the back of the couch facing the front door and her head was down and ears back, but tail wagging like crazy. Like she was thinking she was hallucinating, Is it really them? Then my MIL told me EVERY time a car drove by she ran to the door hoping it was us. So yea, they DEF know time. Also for Katie, my foster who I've only had for 2+ months, when it's 7:30pm she knows it's almost time to go home, and she gets restless until it's time to go. They can tell time and they don't even need a watch or calendar! |
I agree that they can kinda tell time and they know the days of the week. My two get treats at 8pm every night. They start going to the kitchen at about 10 minutes before 8. They know I have to get the green beans out of the freezer and cut up their carrot pieces, so they stand in front of the sink. They also know my day off which is Wed. I take my granddaughter to school and pick her up. At about 2:30 they start standing at the door, because they know they get to go for a ride in the car. They also go bonkers when I come in the door from work and if DH gets home before me, he says they stand at the door staring at it until they hear my car pull in the driveway. |
Mine do. When my son was recently living with me - at the end of each worday he said they went right to my backdoor precisely 20 minutes before I'd pull in like clockwork and just sit waiting and waiting my (late) husband used to tell me the same thing when I was out. They'd run to the door just as I was in our neighborhood - (I used to drive a vett and blamed the car but now I know they really can tell time) |
I know Hot Rod knows when it is Monday. He clings to me more than normal on Monday mornings as if he doesn't want me to leave for work. :( Breaks my heart. |
Oh! I definitely know they know time. I've been told that mine goes in and waits when it's time for me to come home for lunch and home of an evening. So, I'd have to say yes, they know time better than we do.:D |
Hmm...maybe i read that a cat has no sense of time. Now I can't remember. Sorry! Cooper runs to the window everyday at 5pm and waits for my partner to come home. They certainly must have a sense of time. |
me too. i think so.... when i came back on time, my dog is so excited. But sometime i lately came back home, he looked at me like angry... and didnt play with me 555 But he b like this just 1 hrs. , he will be happy again......may b short memory 555 |
Cerise does! She even knows the difference from my work schedule during the week to me being off on the weekend, and on Saturday's and Sunday's she gets VERY watchful, making sure I don't leave home without her ;) She has even been upset with me coming home from work late. I stopped at the grocery store and she fussed when I finally got home...but inspected the bags  At night she lets me know it's time to go to bed too :) |

Pann definitely knows time when he knows I'm leaving for the whole day he tries to keep me inside and drag me back by the bottom of my pants. but when he knows I'm only going to be gone for a short time he's not happy but he doesn't try to keep me home lol. and he's always excited to see me. I just got home today after being away for five days and he was so excited it was crazy, but it's so awesome to be welcomed home like that!!! |
I think yes, and no. My Milly has the same 5-minute syndrome. I can go to put the bins out, come back in and it's like she hasn't seen me all day. But then I recently went away for a weekend and my mum was dog-sitting her. When I came back she went absolutely bonkers. So yes, I do think they have some concept of time, but "any absence is still absence" applies too. |
There are some studies that indicate that anything over 20 minutes a dog loses his sense of time, in other words, 20 minutes is the same as infinity to a dog! They do have a very good sense of time regarding time of day, for example, Joey knows exactly when Daddy's coming home, and he also knows when it's time to eat! :p |

I'm positive mine do. When it's time for me to come home from work they sit by the door waiting. My husband said he can tell time by them, if it is 4:45p they are in the kitchen by the door otherwise they are asleep on the couch. The first week in May I was in Haiti with Project Medishare and my husband said they waited at the door every day and at night every little noise they heard they were up and waiting. When I came home last Monday they went crazy and were right beside me every minute. Every pair of scrubs I pulled out of my suitcase they smelled and my sleeping bag-well they must have crawled in and out of that 50 times http://projectmedishare.org/ |
