Hi everyone,
Now that the thunderstorms are upon us and the 4th of July is right around the corner, Bailey AND I are having many sleepless nights. I've tried so many different things. I've tried the tight shirt and the dryer sheet. I've tried herbal remedies and things like calmicalm that will work for a couple of days on him but then stop working. The only thing that seems to help him any is baby xanax, which i HATE giving him, BUT his little heart beats so fast i'm so afraid he's going to have a heart attack! Today someone suggested dramamine. Has anyone ever used it? If so what dosage? I'm at my wits end with this. I can't stand to see him like this and am seriously terrified he will have a heartattack. he cries and pants and roams the house. Please help with suggestions! Thanks so much!!!

My only suggestions would be rubbing the dryer sheet on a shirt for him or rescue remedy but it seems you've tried both. What does the vet say?

the vet says to put him on permanent anxiety meds or use the xanax but it just stops working after a few days so why would I medicate if it stops working? i'm so frustrated!

hmmmm, it might! i'm just worried because it says you need training with it and i'm unsure of what training to do with it?

Poor Bailey. I had a large Airedale terrier who took refuge in the bathtub during storms.

Have you tried during a storm staying with Bailey in a room without windows, and if possible, a room that is more "sound proof"? If Bailey uses a crate, try padding it to make it more soundproof. You don't have to lock him in it, just make it a nice refuge. (pad on the outside)

If you can, try to anticipate storms and fireworks and make sure Bailey gets a lot of exercise to tire him out. Take him for a walk or play his favorite game. You can follow up with some massage therapy to calm him. If he likes music, try something relaxing.

I hope you do find something that will work for Bailey.

Thanks, yeah we usually both take refuge to a room where the shades are drawn (i've even tried the bathroom). I turn the tv up really loud and turn on a fan, but the storms usully win over the tv. Sometimes it works and he can't hear them and he'll calm down, but it's the middle of the night that kills us both!

I use a fan too in my bedroom, otherwise it is too quiet and we hear every little creak the house makes, the ice maker in the kitchen, and so on.

Here is a link to another thread that has all different ideas of how to help. I started it the other day for Bogey who also does not do well with thunder, car rides, walks and just being out of the house in general.

I wanted opinions on Rescue Remedy but I've tried it now for almost a week and it hasn't helped. We were at the vet today and he gave me something new to try. It was hijacked the first time that I tried posting and it does get a little off course this time too but if you bear with the junk there is a lot of good information and idea of how to help. :)

I hope that you are able to find a solution to Bailey being so frightened of thunder. Poor baby I know well that is like with Bogey too. :(
