Puppy hair Can someone explain to me how the yorkie hair grows? What I mean is...Is there a distinct puppy coat vs. adult coat? My puppy is 18 weeks old. He has a cottony black coat with gray or silver growing in underneath. The tangles are terrible even though I brush or try to comb him everyday. Will this get better? Will the texture of the coat change? |
Puppy hair is the worst! When I got Uni, she was 12 weeks. I made it a point to brush everyday. However, I had a not so good brush (pin brush with the balls at the ends). It tooks me HOURS a day to brush her. I kept thinking, if this is what I have to go through everyday for the rest of her life.... uh uh! She is getting the puppy cut! Then I found a metal tooth comb, and it did go all the way down to the skin, but it ripped out a lot of hair. (Also if you use a slicker brush, it won't go all the way down to the skin.) Anyway, since I thought I was in for a world full of brushing, I cut off all her black puppy hair, and after that the new silver and gold growth was much more silky and didn't mat as much. I have since upgraded to the Madan pin brush. It is soooooooo awesome. PM mimimomo, she sells them and she is awesome. Ask her any question, they have different kinds for different coats. So now I use the Madan for allover untangling brushing, and a metal tooth comb with rotating teeth for stubborn mats. If you are fighting a full body mat, I would suggest to just shave off the black puppy hair. It's gotta go sometime anyway. |
Hey, thanks for your post. When I didn't get any replies to my thread, I went searching on the web for info. I didn't realize that the puppy coat would change so fast. Yes, Copper still has a lot of black coat, but if I cut it off, he will only have about a 1/4 inch of gray all over. I think I'll wait a little while and just keep daily fighting the tangles with combs and conditioner. I guess I'd better take lots of pictures (not that I haven't already) since my little black puppy will be transforming! Thanks again for the info! |
Yes take lots of pics. When I go back and look at Uni's old pics there's like 3 baby pics with her black hair, then 1000 with her awkward "teenage" phase. You will miss the puppy stage once you are out of it. But now that you are in it, it's sure to be a pain LOL! I forgot, what brush/comb and shampoo/conditioner are you using? |
Oh, and the worst part is, after spending so much time brushing them, they go outside for a romp and come in looking like a mop again LOL:). |
Reno's puppy coat just about drove me mad until I found Iv San Bernard's PEK conditioner. Combing out puppy mats would take me an hour to do. But using the PEK conditioner cut the time down to 15 mins or less. Puppy mats can be so frustrating, but take heart, they grow up and their coat grows out quickly.:) Some more advice, do not comb/brush him out with a dry coat, it will break and damage the hair. Spray him with a detangling spray (you can use watered down hair conditioner) before combing out. |
OMG does puppy hair ever suck!!!! when Riley had about an inch of silver growing underneath I shaved that stuff off. he looked so funny for a bit, but it was soooo nice not to have to fight with that puppy crap..lol...oh and a tip for you.take it from me, dont wear clothes on them untill you get rid of that puppy coat..I was wearing clothes on Riley during his puppy coat phase an I would take his shirt off and mattes galore every time, right under his arms. now that he has nice silky beautiful hair I can wear clothes on him with no problem.. |
Wow! Great information!! I had no idea about the puppy coat until we entered this phase...and then I wondered what was going on...Thank heaven for yorkietalk:rolleyes::rolleyes: Lots of good info and people here!!:) |
I had this problem with Chloe when she was younger. I used small scissors opened to run through the mats. Kinda like a knife... worked great. I also came to realize that if I had clothing on her this seemed to cause the majority of the problems. |
yes - from my experience with only 2 yorkies - puppy hair and adult hair are totally different - the changeover is the worst - just make sure you keep brushing every day and hopefully you won't face all the tangles most of us do and a bit of advise - never let them 'stay' in clothes for lenghts of time - it'll be a nightmare trying to get out the tangles - I made that mistake one winter with Cheri and never again :) |
