Fyi When my Aunt was diagnosed with cancer her oncologist told her to keep away from her pets while having Chemo, didn't say why. We figured it was because you are more prone to infection while on Chemo and if you were to get scratched or bitten it could be very serious. Maybe that's why she's keeping them outside. |
Well, I am pretty upset after reading all of this. We cannot possibly go get the puppy until Saturday. Thank you so much for taking the time to give me your advice. |
I'll leave the vax advise to the pros - but she's leaving a tiny puppy and mom outside ? If I were you - I'd go get that poor baby and maybe try to talk her into giving up the dogs she has - these guys are not outside dogs - they just can't take the heat and cold like large breeds. how sad for all involved. You're right to be concerned. Have you spoken to your vet and what does he say ? |
regarding the breeder, how did you find her? is she a reputable breeder? can you research more into who she is & see if she does have positive feedback from others who have dealt with her? can you ask the breeder if you can contact her vet and ask them for a vet reference? |

I know the impulse is to rush in and rescue the pup from this situation. We all would want to do that. I'm just concerned that if she (the breeder) isn't on the up and up that even though you will be helping this one puppy, you will be encouraging her to continue (what at first blush appear to be) her bad practices. For your sake and the dogs sake, I truly hope she is telling you the whole truth. |
Does she live alone? I'm assuming she does as I do not see any reason for her to keep such young pups outside, especially having no vaccines at all. Too bad she doesn't have any family(I'm assuming again) that could help her. Having said all that, if you & your hubby are able, please try to get those pups & even the mom and tell her you can assist finding homes for them. If she's as sick as she says, I don't see her having a problem with that at all, especially if she loves her dogs. Doesn't sound like she planned or prepared for this breeding very well, unless all this came on quickly & unexpectedly. I wish she & the pups well. |
I feel bad about the puppies being outside. However, I got my puppy at 6 wks old, and she is perfectly healthy. She won't eat any soft food, so she is already eating hard food. And beside that point, getting a puppy at 6wks(or however old your pup will be??) where it can live inside and be taken care of is much better than it being outside. I agree that a good idea would be to take all of the pups if you can just to foster them. And I wouldn't pay full price either! I hope you get everything worked out! |
Help! My first litter of Yorkie puppies. I have 5 Yorkie Puppies born Easter morning. They are beautiful! I introduced them to semi-solid food yesterday.Pedigree Little Champions. It's the consistency of tuna. They ate it right down. Should I try feeding them twice a day? :animal36 I can't seem to get them to show any interest in water. I've tried dipping the noses in the bowl, but they shake their heads and back away. Any suggestions? I just wanted to add a note to the previous post about puppy shots. My vet told me to give the first shots at between 8 - 12 weeks. So thats when we go back. |

I would post the question about water as a new thread, more ppl can see it that way!! But just a quick answer, my puppy did the same with the water, but she eventually decided (on her own!) that water was good. Leave it for them where they can find it, and they will prob end up going to it. |
Seven weeks is way too early, regardless of the circumstances. Heck, it's not even legal in many states! Chances are you wouldn't have any problems bringing the dog home that early, but chances are that you would. Those who have not had issues should consider themselves lucky, not use it as a reason to advocate releasing them so young. It's just not worth the risk when it can be avoided. Considering the information you have proviced on the situation, I would look elsewhere and try to find a reputable breeder instead. |
I know that it is easy to jump and say help this poor baby, but what if the woman is lying, what if there are others she plans to breed and use the same story? This kind of thing happens all the time. Did she take full payment or just a deposit? If she took full payment I would feel as if it was a scam. She is taking money for a pet that she is unwilling to even have vaccinated. Not to mention selling them illegally under age. |
Can I ask who is this breeder and where in Oklahoma is she located exactly? I know of alot of breeders here!! Good luck on your deciision for it is a hard one!! Hugs! :aimeeyork:animal-pa:animal-pa |
Hi, well, I talked with her again. She said that I misunderstood, and that the mom goes outside during the day but the puppies are kept inside. I have no idea what sort of medication she might be taking or anything like that. :-( I know at this point that I sound like an inconsistent goofball, and if that is the case, I am sorry. Ok, I am off to read the rest of this thread. |

So is she just letting the mom in and out or is she keeping her outside and separated from the pups? That wouldn't be good because they would be missing a lot of socialization that only she can provide. |

And you should never let a puppy (especially a yorkie = small) outside. I don't even leave my adults outside by themselves as I am afraid something will happen. I have dealt with a horrible breeder and I am just getting bad vibes about this. I think the safer thing would be to get your puppy sooner than later. I have the feeling she is just trying to get rid of them earlier = less work for her, faster payday. I could be wrong and I hope I am. I don't like being so cynical, but like others are saying, too many red flags. |
Thank you so much for your help. The plan is to pick the puppy up sooner rather than later and to access the situation at that time. I will pick up food tonight and be ready to go. I already have everything else. |
Well I didn't know about the "12week" thing when we started looking for puppies. We looked and looked and only one of the local breeders(that wasn't charging 1000.00 for AKC or not doing AKC) never said anything about 12 weeks. I have 3 new yorkies(first time owner) all 3 from different litters different people differnt towns. 2 of them were born 3/10/2010 and 3/11/2010(a day apart) and there doing great. Eating(puppy chow is what they were on but i'm looking at changing that) I did start giving them Nurti Cal 3 times a day just to be on the safe side. They BOTH came with a 1 year Health Guarantee they weighted 1.6lbs when we brought them home that was on 4-29-2010 and there doing great. Then that Monday 5-3-2010 I got another one. She was older at 11weeks NO SHOTS and I took her STRAIGHT to my vets office to get her shots. She had been checked by a vet just no shots given. She checked out just fine and all 3 of my furbabies are adjusting well sleeping with me and going potty outside. They will wine at my back door to go out. Raider(my male) wakes me up by pulling my hair and wineing at night if he needs to go. They come to work with us and they have a room(no carpert) in the back if they do have that accident(and they have) but they will wine at my childs gate to go out. If there in there bed(which is under our desk) they will wine but stay in there bed. Good Luck I can't wait to see pics |
UPDATE: We picked up the puppy on Saturday, or was it Sunday? I'm sorry it took few days to post, but our hands have been full. After three days, she gained 1/2 pound and is running all over the place with a shiny coat. The first day she just slept, and her hair was dull. She goes for her puppy exam tomorrow. We are feeding her human baby chicken food, nutrical, and Royal Canin babydog food. When my husband went to pick her up, the breeder was at the hospital again and a relative gave him the puppy. None of the other puppies were there, but the parents were still there. My husband said there were several people in the house. I am still surprised at how much this puppy poops and pees. We were up most of the night the first two nights, but she only got up twice last night. Thank you for all of your help! It was a very hard decision for us, but I know it was the right thing to do. |
I am so happy for you. Congratulations again. There is nothing in this world like having a yorkie to love. :aimeeyork Please post a photo when you have time and share your stories. We love yorkie pics:)! |
I don't have pix yet. We took her to the vet for her first set of puppy shots, worming, and so forth. They gave us a little puppy pack including the first month's heartworm medicine and did a full exam. The cost -- only $34 bucks for EVERYTHING. We drove across town for this deal, and it's part of the reason I was able to afford raffle tickets for Yorkietalk. Our close vet quoted us $150 for the same exam. She's only 8 weeks old, but there is distemper going around in our area. The vet said she is in great health and looks good. She is itchy tonight after the shot, so I am trying very hard not to worry. My dog obsessed husband has slept on a mattress on the floor next to the backdoor since last Sunday. That way he can let her in and out and make sure she eats regularly all night. She sleeps on his pillow and chews on his ears. Our miniature poodle sleeps in her bed right next to the two of them, and our mixed breed dog who pees on everything sleeps in a crate. |
I'm glad that your puppy is healthy and been vet checked. Please post pics soon. |
