Little problem....
 
so, i have been working with typsy training her to sit, wait, come, you know, the basics....

i allow her on the couch, but she needs to have good manners. :) so i only want her to come up when she is invited. i do that when she sits in front of me and "asks". then i pat the couch and say "come up!" and she immediately jumps up and i praise her. then she can curl up as she pleases.

at first, she was good with being invited, but she has clearly gotten more comfortable here (which is a good thing) and has started to jump up on the couch without asking. every time she does this, i say "down" and i make her get off the couch immediately. if i say "down", she buries herself in the pillow, a cover, whatever, but she never jumps down solely by my voice command. i have to physically make her get down.

i don't get the feeling she doesn't understand, i get the feeling she's just doing what she wants to do. how can i get her to stop this behavior? :confused:

btw, she's now sitting in front of the couch with her back turned to me. :rolleyes:

Instead of putting her down, you need to push her to the edge and make her jump down herself.

You also need to have a command of some sort to tell her that she has to ask nice. Like saying "ask nice" to get her to sit in front of you and ask.

But yorkies are very stubborn so it might take a lot of patience before she learns.

She is likely just confused.

I would try using a different command... her previous owners may have worked with her on some training at some point... the word down is often used to get the dog to lay down, so she may just be confused and that why she is burrowing in blankets. Try using the word "off" when you want her to get down from the furniture.

when i push her off (assuming she's not turning her back to me :rolleyes:) she will sit there looking like "mommy, please pleasepleasepleaseplease!!!) so i give her the signal to come up. is that what you mean?

ok, i switched the command to "off" and she got it and i didn't have to push her off ... i think you're right, she had learned a different command and i confused the two :rolleyes: so i think we're getting back on track...
