Ears not standing... ok, I just read that a yorkie's ears should begin standing at 6-8 weeks. My Yorkie is 7 weeks, and her ears are not lifting. When should I start to worry about it as a problem? (And yes, I realize that she shouldn't have been given to me until 12 wks, but I didn't know that until I had already gotten her!) And if I need to tape, what kind of tape do I use, and do I leave it on all the time? |
I'm not sure about tape, but has the hair been trimmed on her ears? Sometimes thats all you need to do. I'm sure some of the pros here can answer your question better, but I don't think you need to worry about it quite yet, your baby is still young. There is still plenty of time for the ears to go up. Welcome to YT. You could try doing a search on the subject, you may find a few answers that way. |
you can start shaving the hair on the ears completely off...the extra weight could be causing it to weight down...here is a link to a site that can explain process...hope that helps! Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers (How to train Yorkies ears to stand) |
Hi and welcome to YT. All I had to do for both of mine was shave the tips of their ears and I also feed them a little cottage cheese everyday for a couple of weeks. :) |
Moto's ears did not stand till the start of week 11. Don't stress just yet. as previous responses stated shave the ears down half way. Then start massaging his ears a few times a day. My little guy loved that at night while we would watch tv. I also added a teaspoon of yogurt to his dry kibble. Per the breeders directions. On monday his left ear stood on its own it took us till Sunday that week to get his right ear to stand. I was also instructed that as soon as he starts breaking new teeth to again add yogurt b/c its sometimes been noted ears can flop in that time range. * as a note: Just use plain yogurt no flavoring. Cottage cheese works as well. And if you like one more then the other buy the one you like as well. That way if their is any left overs you can have some too. |
Cottage Cheese and yogurt? Thanks for the help! I'm just curious but how does cottage cheese and yogurt help the ears stand up? |

I believe the calcium in the cottage cheese and yogurt help the cartilage in the ears. The ears may also go up and down during the teething stages, because again calcium may be diverted to the teeth instead of the ears. |
When we first brought our lil princess home her ears would flop as well and I just took the clippers and kept the hair trimmed and her ears started to stand up. The extra hair to us is not alot but it actually weighs the ears down. |

Sophie was nearly 6 mths till both ears stood up. We did two months of one ear up, one ear down. And then reversed it. I remember too that it was frustrating but eventually they did both stand up and she has beautiful ears now. PS: Just so you know...some Yorkie's ears never stand up. |
