Rescue Remedy
 

Bogey is horrible on car ride, thunderstorm, construction noise and I have been debating about Rescue Remedy. I finally bought some the other day and now I am wondering about dosage. He's a big boy close to 13 lbs of yorkie lovin' :rolleyes: He loves to go in the car and on walks but is a total freak when I take him.

What dose should be given?

Can I overdose him?

What experience has everyone else had with Rescue Remedy?

How much time should I allow from the dose to the time we go in the car?

Has anyone seen an adverse reaction to using this?

I read an article a couple of years back about Rescue Remedy causing a death in a larger dog. It may have been an allergic reaction.

What I've used is a product called Calm Downs, you can purchase it at pet smart. When living in Texas, I'd administer per label recommendations about 1/2 before the storm hit.

Oh no! What are the ingredients in Calm Down? The RR is made from flowers. LJ had suggested I use it but now I am a little concerned.

I've used Rescue Remedy on all the fosters that had a fear of one thing or another, without any problems at all. For the ones weighing up to 15 pounds, I gave 4 drops 45 minutes before a car ride, being left, going to the Vet. and so on. Works wonderfully and is made of all natural herbs.

It looks like the ingredients in both RR and Calm Down are about the same. But I am going to look around a little more. :)

I started using RR on Kobe, about a month ago. He has bed separation anxiety and anxiety in the car. I give him 4 drops on a treat about 30 to 40 minutes before I leave or we get on the car. He is 8lbs.

Now when I leave he just sits by the window and watches me, or when I open the car door he now jumps in and goes to his seat. RR has worked wonders for us. He's never had bad reaction and he has some allergies.

What was his behavior like in the car before you started giving him the RR?

Bogey is also has major issues when going for a walk. Do you think it might help with that too?

He would whine constantly, drool a little and pace constantly. He wasn't interested in treats at all...he would take it a spit it out. He is a lot better now, sometimes there a little whining but nothing like before.

I think it will help on walks, I give RR to kobe almost everyday and it's made him calmer all around.

We have used the Rescue Remedy spray...I tried it first and wow is it strong and nasty! LOL It did help the dog...not sure if it did anything for me though. LOL

I was thinking about using this too, buuuut, isn't it like a drug, even though it's made from natural ingredients? I would feel like I would want to find out the source of the anxiety rather than to drug em up and cover it. BUT I know easier said than done. I've tried almost everything I could think of for Uni's crazy @ss and she's still crazy. Should I try this?

I use peppermint oil on my babies pads of their feet works wonderful has a very calming affect on them....... Works really well for my Samantha she is my nervous high strung girl.... plus it tastes good to them and will not hurt them, just calming for them. Great for upset tummies too! I have tried RR too, made samantha really sick! IMO would not give it to my furkids I threw it out. Best of luck to you. :aimeeyork:animal-pa:animal-pa

I had used RR prior to ring time on one of my high strung dogs. Well I did until the article I read. But, during thunderstorms I always used Calm Downs. No drug affect but, calmed the dogs that are affected by the storms. I also, use it on the boys when there is a female in Season.

I've heard, and I haven't used it myself, Lavender Oil works wonders. Also, Plush Puppy has a line of oils for different problems.

We haven't used RR, but we tried a different homeopathic type. One type that is supposed to help for car sickness & one for the stress and it didn't help with either! :(

Crosley is anxious in the car. She always wants to go, but about 5-10 minutes in she starts whining, then barking, then this shrill type barking that drives you mad!
Camden is calm as can be, but throws up! We have tried everything with her & nothing has helped.

We have also bought the plug in & spray from Petedge for the house & to spray in car. I think that was comfort zone. That didn't do anything either!
I think you were supposed to wait like 30 min. after spraying in the car.
Now we try and wear Crosley out first, because then she sleeps! We try and make sure it's far enough from dinner time for Camden!

They both are the same dose of 4 drops on a treat or tongue but one has alcohol and the other glycerin and water base.


What I did find and this might go along with Mardelin having read that a pet died from using RR is that they also sell a candy/pill this is made with Xylitol which can cause liver damage to pets and even death.

Boy am I glad that I asked this question otherwise I would have never started digging around.

Seems that both Calm Down and RR have about the same type of ingredients both being homeopathic. I'm questioning the alcohol but I did read in all that I looked into the the alcohol will NOT hurt our pets because of the way it is processed.
