Designer Breeds? First one regrets his decision

interesting article from Australia regarding the Labradoodle.
Man who 'invented' the labradoodle regrets decision to breed world's first designer dog

I wish all designer dog mix breeders (greeders) would come to this point! It is so out of control :(

Ladymom 05-07-2010 01:01 PM

Very interesting.

I know someone who got a Labradoodle here in NC and the dog got the Lab's coat, not the Poodle coat. It shed like crazy.

That's the problem w/designer dogs. They can get the worst of both breeds.

i read about this a few days ago. The guy did have good intentions but unfortunately the greedy money grubbers thought he had a good idea too and ran with it.

If the right coated labradoodles are bred together or a labradoodle with a poodle is bred then they do tend to produce a more poodle-ly coat. all of the doodles i groom, no matter what type of coat they have, do shed. they have lots of undercoat that needs to be brushed out. many people don't understand that when they get a doodle. the coat may not shed all over the house but it does shed all throughout their coat and if not brushed on a regular basis will mat up like crazy.

so many doodles end up in rescue because they are so over bred now.

I think they end up in rescues because they aren't what they are advertised to be such as guaranteed hypoallergenic and as a groomer you know what a coat from h*** is like. Labradoodle, goldendoodles are nightmares usually to groom.
I still don't understand why people who want a nice service dog don't just get a standard poodle. From the right breeder and chosen for what it is wanted for, it will work out fine. Unless the person is allergic to dog dander, then it won't work. A reputable poodle breeder will tell them that.
Also, a standard poodle breeder told me standard poodles also shed to some extent. It has been many many years since I have groomed larger breeds of dogs so I don't remember now but know they were nice dogs to handle for the most part.

doodles are definitely a pain in the you know what to groom. I agree that they end up in rescues because people are misled about what they are getting. byb are just pumping these dogs out by the truck load and people are still buying them up because they are promised a non-shedding, hypoallergenic dog. even that stupid show Dogs 101 on animal planet says they are a low maintenance dog... doodles are great family dogs i think but they require a lot of upkeep with every one of their coat types. all require weekly if not daily brushing to get all that under coat out.

St. Poodles do shed in the brush when your brushing out so they too lose coat and need to be brushed out on a regular basis. Most of the St. Poos i do are great and i love them. i really want to get one in the future.

I think St. Poos make wonderful service dogs as well. If they are kept short they don't need anymore grooming appointments then a golden or lab service dog. We have a golden seeing eye dog that comes to the shop once a month for a bath, brushout and basics done. The owner requests that we don't trim his furnishings tho because he always needs the dog to feel the same without hair growing out every now and then.

 But, as long as there is $$ involved I don't see that happening.:(

Nancy1999 05-07-2010 05:03 PM

I was so shocked to see that article; very interesting that was one of the things he regretted the most. He did it to help handicapped people who were allergic, but so many others are doing it became they didn't have breeding rights. I can't believe how many breeders say you can predict the results or that you get the best qualities of both breeds. I wonder how many other breeders are going to regret their choices.

kalina82 05-07-2010 05:18 PM

i think i read somewhere that with the labradoodle you can predict coat type and they are getting a more standard look from the serious breeders. however the golden doodle has yet to achieve that status. breeders are trying to get the labradoodle recognized as a breed.

I do like the labradoodles coats better then the G. doodles because they are easier in my opinion to take care of, especially the wiry coat types. i love those ones even tho they are the shedding allergy coats. I hate the fleece coats, those mat the worst and those are the most popular. And then there is the wool coat which is the most like a poodles coat and those are the dogs with the owners who say "don't make him look like a poodle!" And i want to say, "um are you kidding me, you do know he is a POODLE mix with curly POODLE hair....." but of course i keep my mouth shut.... for the most part... hahahaha

Actually that article is taking some things out of context. Here is Wally's actual statement ALAA Labradoodle History

The Australian labradoodle is mixed with a lab, poodle and cocker. They actually breed the labradoodle with cockapoo.

I don't know if things were taken out of context, Fox news also interviewed him. FOXNews.com - Labradoodle Pioneer Regrets Fashioning 'Designer Dog'

Quote:

THE man who bred the first labradoodle - and in the process made the mutt a desirable accessory - says it's the great regret of his life.
The puppies were supposed to have the best traits of both dogs: the affable, controllable nature of the labrador, and the curly, non-shedding coat of the poodle. . ."But now when people ask me, `Did you breed the first one', I have to say, `Yes, I did, but it's not something I'm proud of'," Mr Conran said. "I wish I could turn the clock back."
"I'm not at all proud of my involvement in it," Conran said. "But the genie's out of the bottle, and you can't put it back."

kalina82 05-07-2010 05:58 PM

I find the Australian labradoodles to be complete nightmares. they are so much worse to groom behavior wise and coat wise then American lab x poodle mixes.

yorkieusa 05-07-2010 06:45 PM

I'm sure all of the dogs regret his decision, too.

scentlady 05-07-2010 09:03 PM

I know there's pros and cons for mix breeds. But for me, my life, my taste and most of all MY PREFERENCE is full bred dogs from reputable breeders.
Its a joy to support those that breed for the betterment of the breed and to own one of their dogs. I've enjoyed seeking out high quality breeders for the last 3 dogs I've owned over the last 17 years. It's a learning process and I've been blessed with healthy dogs.
I'm not looking for an arguement and I'm in no way putting down ANY dogs, just throwing in my two cents.
