The Weirdest Thing Happened... So yesterday we were sleeping and all of a sudden a growl and a loud bark woke me up. - guess Charlie heard someone in the kitchen and he couldn't see who it was since I put up a little baby gate in the door at night. It turned out to be my mom in the kitchen. I thought it was just a one time thing. Then today he was sleeping and he heard someone at the door about to open it and he woke up really fast and started growling and barking from the bed again. He didn't get off the bed to check this time though. Then earlier we were in the car and a lady pulled up next to me at the stoplight and he started growling and barking again. Can someone tell me what's going on with Charlie? Is it agression? For a little extra info, he's already been neuteured and he just turned 6 months. I've also had him plenty socialized with people as well as other dogs. He use to LOVE random people, or maybe he still does, but since yesterday I'm not so sure! Also how do I correct this behavior because when he does this it makes me jump out of my skin almost. Pretty scary! |

I found that Lexi did this a couple times already. It was just my dad making noise in the hallway. She just jumped up from her sleep so I had to assume she wasn't fully aware. She did it a couple of times when my sisters came home. It's cute. But she didn't growl, only "woofed." |
Dogs begin to get a sense for what is their property. For instance when we got to a park or mall (public place); Miley doesnt growl at anybody or any dog. She understands that the park is for everybody to enjoy. But if she sees someone through the window at our house, she growls to protect what is ours. She knows that the house is her family's place and nobody is going to get by her. When we ride in the car, she sometimes growls and people walking on the sidewalks...she just doesnt want anybody to get her mommy. I always have to tell her that I am okay and that she is a good girl for protecting me. Once i tell her its okay..she stops her growling and kisses me. |
He is growing into a big boy. You should be excited he wants to protect you, its out of love he does it. While the noise he makes may make your skin jump thats the same feeling hes having too. His dog sences are kicking in saying danger danger. As for the lady in the car next to you, Im gonna guess she either had bad taste in music or cars.... :) In all seriousness. They believe in a boundary area or zone so to speak. Cross that line or get in that space its game on. I have an extremely protective pack here at my house. One sounds the alarm and they all go into ninja mode. But I have to agree that when there in the mist of sleep and something sounds the alarm they have to check the source of the noise before we can calm down or go back to sleep. |
Oh thank goodness this wasn't like an aggression thing or anything and it's just them being protective. I was going to mention that he only does it with me but okay now this all makes sense! So it's nothing bad then? |
Yorkies are known to be good watch dogs and being protective goes along with it. |
