Keeping other animals away Latley I have been staying up later then normal from being stressed which means Callie has to and normally she just sleeps in the chair. Well now around 1am she goes outside and all the way to the back of the fence and barks (Callie rarely ever barks) so it scares me and in my pjs I throw open the door and start Calling for her and making loud noises hoping what ever it is gets scared away. I can't see back there really well even though we have awesome bright back lights but I know its something because when Callie was standing still and not barking I could hear something moving around in the leaves and brush behind our fence. I'm worried about it because one night I had her in her robe after a bath and it velcros and the tie was in a knot and some how it came off of her without untying and with no rips or anything. I dont want anything to hurt her or if its a skunk to skunk her. Does anyone know of anything I can do to keep animals away wether it be a cat, deer, racoon or whatever it is? |
Are you in the country? Do you have neighbors? I live in the country and was curious about all the creatures lurking in our woods since I got Bridget. I was just reading an article about raccoons and how being nocturnal they don't like bright lights -they suggested a motion light as a porch light may not be enough, or a radio set to a talk station (doesn't have to be loud - just enough for them to hear). But of course if you have neighbors I'm sure the flood lights going off all night could make for a bad relationship. It also said to be sure there was no food or water around to attract them. I'm assuming your fence is high enough that something couldn't crawl or jump over. Hopefully it's just a bunny!! Good luck! |
The safest thing would be night time leash potty. Give her enough to get to a potty spot but not all the way to the back of the fence, and you can bring her back in as needed. We live in a rural area surrounded by woods all the way around us. Granted my outdoor dog does a great job at keeping animals off of our lawn but it only takes a second. So we leash potty at night. I have herd that hair cutting repels animals. Maybe you could call your stylist and tell her you want to put it around some flowers to keep animals away, then sprinkle a good amount on the outside boundaries of your fence line? I think a barber shop would actually be better since it would be shorter hair. |
Definitely a leash. I don't live in the country but my backyard is nothing but woods with a whole lot of little creatures. Brandi will not venture any further a few steps from the patio. She does not like going out back so much so that I have started taking her out front for her last potty. The daytime she loves it but a night forget it. It didn't use to bother her until she heard something one night (so did I) and ever since than she will not potty out back at night anymore. Because I am diligent particularly at night, I pay attention to her body language. If she is standing stiff to the point where she can't even relax enough to pee, it's in the house we go. Now I don't even chance it, I just let her pee out front where she is much more relaxed and able to pee. I gave up on ever having her go out back at night. |
I live in the woods and have a doggie door, which I close right before dark and Addy has to use the pee pads inside. |

How about lighting up the back of your yard? A quick flick of the lights should scare off anything that shouldn't be there. |
