New Yorkie mommy Hello All Yorkie Lovers!!! I just picked out my yorkie baby last weekend and names her Kylie! I pick her up a week from today (Mothers day..how fitting!?)!!! I am so excited, I have been waiting 20..yes 20 years for a yorkie of my own!! Anyone have advice for a new yorkie mom? I am planning on crate training asap...she will be 16 weeks when I get her next week!! I would LOVE and appreciate any advice on training, health, happiness etc! Looking forward to hearing from all the experts and fellow yorkie parents out there and will post pictures asap!! |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Congrats on the new baby. Have you considered using an expen instead of a crate... this way she can have access to food and water as well while she is contained. Also have you chosen a food you want to feed her yet, choosing a high quality food is one of the most important decisions you can make when getting a new puppy. Yorkies should not be walked with collars (they are fine to hold ID tags) but a harness should be used for walking. Thats all I can think of now... let us know if you think of any specific questions! |
Congrats on your new baby Kylie and Welcome to YT. You will find an abundance of information and support from wonderful and experienced people here!!:) |
I already bought several (I have spent soo much money on cute puppy things already!!) harnesses and leashes...and a cute collar for tags only! I hadnt thought about using a pen...does that work better? The problem is I dont have large enough space without carpeting. The breeder has been feeding her Extension Little Bites for Toy and Miniature Dogs....I didnt plan on keeping her on it (I know to gradually wean her off of the food she is used to) unless others on here think that is the right food. Any suggestions on food or if that one is okay? ahhh sooooo excited!!! I am already so in love :) |
this may be a silly question...but how can I display her picture under my username?? I love everyones slideshows and pictures! |
Welcome and congratulations - can't wait to see pics!!! |
Welcome to YT. You will find all kinds of great info here and some of the best people right here on this wonderful site. :welcome4: |
Welcome, can' wait to see your new baby. If at all possible an X-pen is great. It has room for a bed, food and water and potty pad, all the essentials, plus some room for play. |
good news Quote:
that would be the same way to create a picture album, hope this works out for you and welcome to yt, best of luck with your furbaby, |
Thank you! Now her pic is displayed :) Love her face...cant wait to see her in 7 days! |
Welcome to YT! You're going to love your baby!! Here are a few things I can say from experience. Crate training works great, however the only downside is for it to be effective, you have to spend quite a bit of time with your baby in the crate. We crate trained our chihuahua and it worked wonders, but we've eventually weaned him from it and he's never crated. I recently got a little yorkie and she has done wonders with bell-training. We are right around 15 weeks and she hasn't had an accident in a few weeks and lets us know every time she has to go out. Training is always the hardest for me!!!! |
Thank you! I did the bell training with my black lab but after 6 years being away from home (college and grad school) i am moving back in with my parents and black lab for a little bit. We are concerned how my 9 year old lab will be with Kylie! How does the bell training work if Kylie will be up a flight of stairs from the door with me (we are going to keep her upstairs for a little under supervision until my lab gets used to her!) |
I would suggest putting the bell by the door you go out of. We did that, and every time we take her out, we make her ring the bell and we say "potty outside" Then we took her out. A little peanut butter helped get her familiar with ringing it. Now, we're able to have a bell upstairs as well, and she knows that ringing it will get her to go outside. It just took a few days of having only one bell right by the door, and LOT'S of heavy watching. The best schedule I can tell you is right when they wake up, 10-15 min after eating, right after playing, right after naps, and before bed. Ours has slept in the bed with us since we got her, she has never had an accident. But, then again all dogs are different!! If you have a lot of time to commit, it works easier than crating. We crated her when we left the house from the minute we got her. Now, she's gotten more trustworthy and can go an hour or two without using the potty inside. Good Luck!! If you have any more questions, I'll be glad to answer! |
