Female humping male? I have a 3 year old female yorkie who will occasionally hump my 13 year old male. Both were fixed at 6 months, so I know that it is not a sexual thing, or at least, I don't think so. My older yorkie doesn't quite know what to make of it when it happens. He looks confused. My question is...do we fuss at her for doing it? I am not sure if she is doing anything wrong. |
Usually it is a sign of dominance. My poodle tries to hump Ladybug all the time. Funny because Ladybug is more the alpha dog over Ladybug. It is best to not make a big deal out of it. Just seperate them for a few minutes and distract them. |
Nala just started humping her stuffed dragon (who she has had since we got her, and she is just over a year). We've seen her do it twice...is that ok/normal? If it's an assertive thing should she be doing it to our other dog who she is the boss of lol? |
It's normal. A little embarrassing, but normal. It is a sign of dominance- and if she's doing it to the dragon instead of the other dog, it's because the dang dragon hasn't showed her the proper respect yet :) |

Just FYI, there is some question that it is actually a dominance behavior. The best explanation I've seen is that it's a nice stress reliever, which would explain why some dogs hump air. This link has very practical advice on when to stop humping: stop the humper in action, and see if the humpee siezes the opportunity to flee. :) The Down & Dirty on Humping: Sex, Status, and Beyond | Dog Star Daily |
