A Blessing??? My little Gabriella is 6 mos. She barely makes a sound at anything! Occassionally she will whimper if she wants out of her carrier, but only for a second or two. When she did "bark" , it was so soft I couldn't believe she actually made the sound! From my past experiences with Yorkies, they barked a lot and quite loudly. I am considering taking her to the Vet to be checked out just to make sure she is normal! Does anyone on this Forum have a quiet little Yorkie??? |
I would say it is a blessing!! Mine is fairly vocal, but I'm sure you'll hear of others with quiet ones.:) |
I do!! My little girl never barks EVER! She only cries if she wants me to do something and I'm not. She does make noises when she plays with her brother though! It's really funny to hear her actually make noise!! We call her our little mute! |
Ok! Good to know! I am not complaining, just never experienced such a thing! |

I have Shay, 14 months, he meows...lol...YES meows...NEVER barks, have heard him bark one time in a yr... NOW Bella...she is almost 5 months old...and O MY GOODNESS you would think she was 50 pound dog when she barks...she is 2.8 pounds..lol...she is also a lil whiner..ugggg! trying to break that... So be thankful...lol.. |
Mine only barks when someone rings the door bell, and it is a very deep bark, like a 50 lb dog. When she wants my attention, she makes growly wookie noises, just her way of talking. |
so funny to read and "hear" all these responses! You just never know what you are going to get with a Yorkie...and that's what makes them so special! |
My sister had a yorkie many years ago that barked, but always sounded like he had laryngitis. It was kind of sad for him. Mine all bark at any little movement or sound. I wish they were quiet like Gabriella! |
Where do I get one of these silent yorkies??? I WANT ONE. Does the genetic defect that eliminates the barking come with any undesirable side effects, such as excessive licking? Even so, I'd call it a bargain.:D |
Gatsby was very quiet as a puppy very very quiet in fact he did not bark once until he got to meet tazy my best friends grandmas yorkie we joke that tazy helped him find his yorkie bark now when he wants something he will make a noise sort of like chewbacca from starwars we call it trilling its the best i can come up with to describe it |
Pixie is 8 months and not much of a Barker except when I leave. Daisy does all the darn barking for her its like having two kids and one talks so much the other one never gets a word in edge wise!! lol |
So far no side effects from being silent. I almost wonder if the breeder had her "soft barked" before I got her. She was a little older, 4 1/2 mos. All her permanent pets have been 'soft barked'. I hope this is not the case, sounds a little like cruel, to me. I am going to ask her when I speak to her next week. |

From my understanding, it is a surgical procedure to the vocal cords. |
It's called debarking or devocalization surgery. Basically tissue is removed from the vocal cords. It's very controversial and many vets refuse to perform it. Mine is one that won't do it, for that I am grateful. I would not elect to have this done on my dog either. Seems extreme and risky to inflict upon a perfectly healthy, normal animal. :thumbdown |
I agree about not getting such an operation. I don't think anyone would even consider such a thing unless it was a critical situation where the barking was making it a "stop barking or give up the dog" scenario. I can get my guys to stop barking, but it can take a while, and if you give into them and do what they want to get them to stop, you are just training them to continue barking even more. I love my Yorkies as much as anyone could, but it would be great if they were of the barkless variety! :aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
mine is a cry baby my guy only barks at the door bell, and the tv door bells other then that he is quiet. Thank goodness, but boy does he whine....we went to a auction tonight and there were some little kids there and he loves kids and he was so whiny cause he couldn't get to them. |
i've only heard my dog bark once (i've only had her about 24 hours), but when she did, it was a surprisingly loud looooooong bark, like a series of little barks strung together ... i corrected her and she stopped immediately ... she doesn't seem to respond to what's happening outside the front door anymore, but we'll see if she keeps it up.... |
My little girl is very vocal. I am hoping to get one like yours when I pick up our baby yorkie girl on Thursday. |
