how big How big should a male yorkie be at 6 months? I picked one up from a local breeder as I wanted a dog that was a bit older and he is very cute but seems a bit large to me. He is almost 8 pounds. I dont plan on showing him and his personality is great I was just wondering how big males can get and how big they "should" be. Thanks!! |

How big or how small a yorkie gets when they achieve adulthood is based on many factors. The lines they are from/genetics, etc. Your young man may stop growing now, or he can have another growth spurt. But, he isn't going to be a little guy that's for sure. Just make sure the weight he's carrying isn't based on fat and it's solid. I do love those larger yorkies, they are much more durable than the smaller ones. |
Well, standard yorkies are not supposed to exceed 7lbs but the majority of this board does not have standard yorkies! My boy is 16lbs at 1.5 years old. He was 6lbs at 12 weeks old and stayed at around 12lbs for a looongg time until recently. He's not overweight at all; if anything he's fairly skinny. A good estimate of an adult weight is to double their 12 week old weight. It all boils down to genetics and breeding, etc. There's a lot of people NOT breeding to standard anymore (and personally I like the bigger guys!) plus with yorkies being the #2 registered dog, they are popular and overbred. They also used to be bigger as they descended from a lot of different larger terriers like the Skye Terrier so even small parents can sometimes produce large pups. |
Hi, Welcome to YT and Congrats on the new addition. The standard for yorkies of either gender is "not to exceed 7 pounds", so technically thats how big they "should" be... but in reality some yorkies are larger then that. Likely this is why the breeder was selling him at an older age, he just got a bit too big for their program... however, for your sake it just means you got more to love and dont have to be quite so worried that you guy will get hurt! You are still going to have a pretty small guy on your hands. :) |
