How do you get 'em to hold still long enough to take their pic? Just picked Miss Ellie up from the beauty parlor and wanted to take some pics but found it nearly impossible. she's a little blur and is long gone by the time the camera focuses and is ready to snap. i ended up with a bunch of blah pics and none of them show her pretty little face. So what's the trick to making them stand still for a photo shoot? |
Generally, if you place them someplace they can't jump and get hurt and hold a toy or treat you can get some pics. It's hard to get puppies to be still. I can remember having lots of blank pics!:D They're gone before you know it! |
I know I sure wish I knew. My Sophie is sooo cute but all her pictures she looks like an enormous flat faced head! Giant head or a blur. Our camera does the same thing, you push the button she moves and then it takes the picture. |
4 Attachment(s) Jackson's always been a good lil' picture poser since he was a pup. I think he likes being the center of attention ;) so it's never been too difficult. When I got my DSLR camera though, I began getting even BETTER shots because there's really *no* shutter lag/delay. But other than having a good camera, I always use a good treat. He knows when the camera comes out, that he gets something good, like bits of cheese, or pieces of chicken, etc so he's always cooperative! But, teaching them commands is really important first... if I want Jackson laying down, I just say 'down' and if I want him sitting or staying, I tell him what to do. :) I always do the holiday pics, hehe... like below, and he knows the routine  |
Does she sit? I give that command with someone holding a treat behind me. I also like the sports burst mode on my camera just in case they make a break for it ;) Britster, those are great pics! |
Before Christmas one of the hosts on qvc was giving some tips. His tip for dogs was... right when you are ready to shoot the pic, 'sneeze' & that's your moment to click the pic. Just thought I'd pass that on. |
I think that comes with maturity.:p Puppies can't sit still no matter how much you want them to. I didn't start taking pictures of Buddy much until after I found YT. He was 1yr old so perhaps around that time you will have better luck. He sees the camera and just poses.:p You can put him in any position and say STAY and he does. Be patient, one day you'll be beaming and showing off your baby instead of a blur. |
I work a lot with my dogs on the sit and stay command. One is much better than the other, but like some others have said. Mine will do most anything for a treat including pose. One trick though, have your camera all ready before you start. I can't tell you how many pictures I have missed out on because I get them to sit and stay, then my camera is not "on" or on the right setting, and I miss it. LOL. Also, a squeeky toy works great sometimes too. They will sit and look for where the squeek is coming from and you can get good expressions. Of course it helps to have someone helping you with the squeeker so you don't have to take pictures one handed. Good luck and just do a lot of practicing. |
I read on here to keep a treat right at the eye level in front of the camera. For it works 99% of the time. Hot Rod doesn't like the flash so he's gun shy no matter if I'm using the flash or not but I've gotten some really great shots of Magge with this trick. I'm going to try the sneezing one, maybe Hot Rod will do better with that. Thanks! :) Brit, I hadn't seen Jackson's Christmas picture, great picture!! They are all great! |
O boy....same problem here with Shay he is 14 months old...he wont look up or stay..which he knows how to sit, stay and lay down...but wil he? NOPE..lol Bella is a lil over 4 months old and she will sit, pose the whole 9 yards..lol.. Most my pics. have her sitting pretty looking at me and him with his head down like he is in trouble ....lol |
My Bella is pretty active but I try to wait for a lull and then I have the camera ready and make a high pitch squeak. She will generally look at me and cock her head like...huh? Another way is to put them on the bed and kind of corner them with a toy or treat or something. |
Something about the camera has always held Kimbo's interest. I pull it out and he holds completely still. Sometimes I think he might be scared of it. He doesn't shake or whimper, though. I can even hold up an imaginary camera by forming the shape with my fingers in front of my face and he'll stop and stare at me. He's a total camera hog! |
I have a replacement squeeker for a toy I use because it makes the sound but they cant see the toy ...mommies sneeky....I also notice that most of you use the "Stay" command...ive always used the "wait" command and it seems to work better for me it has a heavier sound to it also try "Hold" alot of people find if they have a hard to control dog german commands because they are so heavy work wonderfully im actually teaching Penny german commands and shes doing awesome plus you sound really cool lol the german command for stay is Bleib! Achtung! (Ahk-toong’): Watch! Attention! Aus! (Ows): Out! Drop It! Let Go! Bleib! (Blibe): Stay! Bringen! : Bring! Fetch! Fass! (Fahs):Attack! Take hold! Fuss! (Foos): Heel! Gib Laut! : Bark! Speak! Hier! : Here! Come! Hopp! : Up! Jump! Nein! (Nine):No! Pass auf! (Pahs owf): Pay attention! Heads Up! Pfui! (Foo-ey): Shame! Stop That! Drop That! Platz! (Plots): Down! (Place) Setz! , Setzen! (Zetze’n): Sit! Such! (Zook): Search! Voran! (For-ahn): Go forward! Take the lead! Voraus! (For-ows): Go forward! Run out! |

Overall, for portraits, I defer to the experts! It is hard. I like the squeaker idea though! |
