Layla's looking a little sad... ... and I'm not sure why! Yesterday was such a cold and miserable day and it ended up SNOWING all day long, so we all stayed inside! We kept pretty busy though. Layla followed us around, up and down the stairs, growling at the wind and running around as usual :) I was on my computer last night and she was laying at my feet, and then I told her it was bedtime so I put her out to pee and she walked to the end of the deck, and then walked right back to the door to come in without peeing. Oh well, I thought maybe she just didn't have to and we'd go to bed. If she wanted to use her pad overnight, she would. I walked upstairs and looked back and she had only made it up a few steps and stood there staring at me. I continued to the bedroom and came back, and she was up a couple more steps but wouldn't go any further :( So I picked her up and brought her to the bedroom. She clung to me! When I put her down, she walked slowly to the bed with her tail pushed tightly against her butt, and layed down on the floor. I couldn't coax her to get on the bed, so I thought maybe she had a tummy ache and would be better by morning. She snored all night long, but still acted weird this morning. We let her outside (after having to carry her downstairs) and she did go down into the yard this time and peed, but my boyfriend couldn't get her to come back up the stairs! She just looked at him with her big sad eyes, so he picked her up and brought her inside. She ate her treat but wasn't even excited about it. I know something must be wrong  I feel so bad for coming to work today instead of staying with her! I'm hoping she's back to her old self soon. I miss her wagging tail :( |
You might want to call your vet and see if she needs to be seen. Hope she cheers up soon. |
I thought I'd give her a day to see if she's feeling better before calling the vet. Maybe she was just sad about the cold and snow yesterday after being mostly inside after a long cold winter already... last week was so warm and she was outside constantly! Hmmm... |
Is she spayed? If not, she might be coming into a heat cycle. What you describe is very similar to how Addie acted when she had her first and only heat cycle (she couldn't be spayed earlier due to low weight issues). You can look to see if her vulva is swollen. Otherwise, is there some reason she might be feeling pain? You might want to take her to the vet, especially if you notice she's not eating, or has any other physical symptoms. |

That sounds like gas. My pups have had that too, but it's been awhile so I didn't think of it. When their tummies feel tight, I give them little belly massages to get things moving. If it didn't feel as bloated today, she should start perking up soon. The discomfort is probably why she doesn't want to move much. She might be a bit constipated too, so giving her something to speed along digestion might help. I think pure pumpkin does this really well. |
Thanks! I thought it may have worked itself out overnight, but I guess maybe not. Does banana help with digestion too? I thought I heard that before. |
I don't know about banana. I give mine a piece of banana every now and then. Maybe that's why they don't get so bloated as much anymore. :) |
We got home after work and Layla is not okay. She couldn't walk right or sit down. We called the vet but they were closed. We left a message on the emergency phone and I called her old vet. After going through not so great options the new vet called and said she'd meet us in 10 so we rushed over. After everything she figured there's no sign of neurological damage, no stomach pain, and no fever. Since she'd be stressed staying the night, she gave us some non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and want us to drop her off in the morning for admission for the day. They'll do x-rays and watch for seizures. She seems to have trouble with one leg falling under her and she can't get up unless she backs up against something. I have tears pouring from my eyes because my baby is in so much pain and i can't do a thing |
Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry! Please keep us posted. I hope she'll be okay. Hugs and warm thoughts to you all. |
Thank you. She can't even relax, she's shaking and panting. Her legs are all tensed up and she won't even bend them. |
I hope they find out what is wrong with your baby. You might want to post this in the sick and emergency forum to see if you get any more responses. Thinking of you. |
I agree. They might be able to give advice as to keeping her comfortable until her vet appointment tomorrow. |
I posted it there too. Scott (my boyfriend) just took her upstairs and I went up to check on them and they're both laying on the bed. She looks fairly comfortable and her legs look a little more relaxed. I think I need to go take over from him now because his food is ready in the oven. I will be back to check on responses soon! |
I am so sorry to read about Layla having medical problems. I have to tell you...from your first post, a ruptured disk in her back came to mind immediately. My daughters yorkie had that happen a couple of years ago. He was paralyzed in his back legs. Our vet told us that the first sign of a back problem is the dog will not walk up stairs. We were told we could treat it with prednisone and pain killers or we could take him to the University for surgery. He did tell us that he has seen as many dogs recover from this without surgery as with. We treated Kirby at home and had to keep him in a small cat crate unless we held him on our laps, and carried him outside to potty and then carry him back in. The reason for that was to keep him from much movement as that disc was pressing on the spinal cord and if it penetrated the spinal cord, it would be permanent paralysis. It took weeks of recovery and he lost all his muscle mass and looked so pitiful, but one day he started walking and there was still a little foot drag, but it was so much better and he wasn't falling over as he was doing before. Have your vet do x-rays of her back. This just sounds so much like what happened with Kirby. Kirby recovered fully and we were all so thankful. I will say a prayer for your precious baby. |
