Introducing Yorkies to a new cat Todaywe brought home a sweet 3 yr. old cat to foster from a rescue org. in NYC. We have her in a different room from the dogs. I need some advice about how to introduce her to the dogs in a safe way. We had her out in the den with us for a little while and there was a lot of hissing and barking/growling. One of the dogs lunged for her and she gave him a good smack. She has her claws. Is there a way to make this work? We would love to be able to adopt her if everyone can get along. |
Let them have time Hi! I have 2 cats, a German Shepard and I'm getting my yorkie in a few days. My best advice is to let them have some time together while also letting them have an "escape route" if they need. My first cat Kaos is my baby and very jealous. When I first brought my other cat, Fuzz, home, she was not happy. they fought for awhile, and Kaos would hide in my bedroom for hours. However, when she realized this was a permanent thing she got over it. Make sure to give your puppies lots of love and attention so they dont feel replaced, but also let them see you love on the cat so they will know that you accept him. If you accept him they will learn to do so too! Just give everyone some time. Hope it all works out!:) |
I had my cat Zoey for 12 yrs before I got Brandi. I kept them apart a few days because Brandi was a rescue and she needed to go to the vet's first for her shots, deworming...you name it she probably had it. However once I introduced them Zoey did take a swat at her. Brandi rolled on her back in kinda of in a submissive position. It was so sad seeing her like that. After a few days, Zoey was okay. She figured out her escape routes (anyplace up hide) and now they just sort of tolerate each other. The only time when they get into an "argument" is when they both want my attention at the same time. What's really weird is Zoey is stay very playful and I can see she wants to play with Brandi by running up to her, and the take up off running but Brandi just ignores her. I guess being crated for most of her life, Brandi never really learned how to play.....she's getting better. She does play tag with me but that's pretty much it. My cat actually does better with dogs than other cats so for me it worked out. BTW...dogs are pretty smart when it comes to cats. A couple of swats and they quickly learned to leave them alone. |
