Need help! Doesn't like small children anymore My dog used to love small children. When he would see them he would get all excited wanted to give them kisses and loved to be petted by them. One day I was taking him for a walk and I stopped to talk to a neighbor who had small children. The neighbor asked if he was friendly and I said yes. He was acting okay, and a few minutes later he was growling a little and doing his anxiety bark. He now does this every time he is near a small child. I do not know what happened to change his behavior, and I am not sure what to do. I don't want him snapping and biting a small child. Any help in this matter will be much appreciated. |

Gosh, that's a tough one. Sometimes kids are intimidating to dogs. They have all that energy and they're loud and make quick movements. Something must've spooked him and I assume you don't have kids yourself so he doesn't have a lot of positive experiences to fall back on. If it were me, I would have the kids come in and ignore him, be very low key, and just toss a piece of cooked chicken to him. Then have them just sit and every so often toss him a piece of the chicken and see how he does. Of course, I would be sure he is leashed and I'd probably pick a little bit of an older child who understands and not sure if you know anyone like that.... Aside from that, maybe a trainer as this could become a serious problem. Maybe others will have better advice. Good luck! |
Thanks, I will give your suggestions a try. I don't have any small children any more. They all grew up, and thats why they got me the dog. |
