Yay or Nay? Chip information I've seen tons of new collar tag threads and I see lots of good posts both pro collar and against. It's been very informative. Anyway, I see lots of people put the chip number on their baby's collar. Now I'm wondering if I'm using the microchip tag the correct way. I kid with my parents that the chip is my puppy LoJack. I have one for the car and it has this extra tag I'm suppose to carry around, similar to the tag that comes with a pup's microchip. Bear with me I have a point! :) So the big yellow tag for the chip I assumed was for me to have and carry around in case Kaji ever ran off. I'd have the number handy for the chip company and his chip number. Now, some of you put that tag on your babies. I thought that you weren't suppose to do that for safety reasons. It's like having my car LoJack access key in my car. If anyone was to take the car, and that access key was inside, no one would know the car was taken until we look for it. Same with the pup, someone would have key information on my puppy making it easier for them to keep him. I've also heard crazy stories about how people used that microchip tag information on dogs they found and simply changed ownership to themselves. So what are you suppose to do? Have your pup carry the tag, or you carry the tag? Currently, the microchip tags hangs on my key chain, but I'm wondering if Kaji should be wearing it. |
I also have his Microchip # and information tag on my key chain. :) I don't really want Jackson to be wearing it for reasons you stated. If someone were to find him, they would have his microchip number and I think it'd somehow be easier for them take ownership of him if they wanted to. Although, they would need a password (right?) to log into the website of the microchip company.... so I guess it still would be a challenge. But I just prefer to have it on me. However... I wonder if it would be smarter for people to simply have the word "microchipped" on the dogs name tag, but with no number, so that if an honest person finds your dog, and brings it to a vet/shelter/etc, they will know to scan the dog. |
Oh, that's a great idea to have "microchipped" on the tag. I going to get Zhoie a new today that's just got my ph# and the word. Cool........thanks!:) |
I'm wondering if putting "microchipped" on the tag would make someone LESS likely to take my little dude in to the vets; knowing that the likelihood of getting caught is increased... |
to chip or tattoo On a similar topic. There have been reports about tumors around the chips, but the tattoo seems so big as I assume you use their AKC number. Opinions please. |

As for chips causing cancer~that is a total fabrication of the puppymill industry and should not be believed. I believe in chipping and tags. :) |
What about putting "spayed" or "neutered" on their tags, so that if someone steals them, they might be less likely to keep them (since they can't be used to breed)? |

I fear that if I put "microchipped" a dishonest person would keep him and then not take him to the vet for fear that a vet will discover that is not their dog. That hits close to home because my bf's parents did this exact same thing. They bred their found dog, and now have 4 puppies and the one dog they "found." It's frustrating because they won't listen to reason and they don't vet the momma dog, just the puppies. |

The subject about dogs causes a strain on my relationship because boyfriend see's nothing wrong with what they did, and he thinks I'm a little looney for the "exaggerated" way I care for Kaji. I'm winning him over to my way of thinking little by little. Kaji might be a scaredy cat but he's so much better behaved, trained, and better socialized than his "dad's" dogs. He'd rather spend time with Kaji than his dogs. :p |

Let's say a dishonest person finds the dog, and doesn't vet it until it is totally sick, maybe the vet will scan. HOWEVER, not all vets will scan unless you ask them to, which a dishonest person would not do. :( what to do then? But I have mine chipped just for the extra bit of safety. so, what am I saying? I dunno. |

haha, capt noonie, I love reading the things you write!!! I totally agree - I wouldn't ever put that my boys were chipped on their tags. It's a good idea to keep the chip numbers on your keychain though, I never even thought of that! I had no idea that people would dig out chips, I just figured that I wouldn't want someone who found them to keep them from the vet... |
