How Old to Clip? I wanted to know at what age you can begin to clip your dog. I read that most dogs do not get their full adult coat until after 10 months of age and it is important to not clip prior to that time? I really wanted to get my girl groomed soon and cleaned up a bit. |

My Yorkie Tiki had her first big trip to the groomer at 5 months, to get her straggly black puppy hair trimmed off down to her lighter silvery blue color. Up until then I just trimmed a little around her face & privates as needed. Her coat color and texture has continued to change over 2 years, and I keep her in a medium-short length. |
My girl is 4.5 months old and has had all her shots except her rabies which she is getting next week. I wanted to schedule an appointment for her after her rabies shot. She did get the Bordatella vaccine (via intranasal) too at 12 weeks of age. I guess she's also due for another Bordatella too? I was told by the Vet Tech when I called to schedule her rabies shot this. But I thought Bordatella via intranasal is good for 6 mos at least. Do younger puppies require 2 doses or something? So with the replies above, I'm assuming this wait until they are at least 10 months old to get clipped information that I read is fiction and doesn't make a difference... Thanks! :) |
I just could not wait Ush had his first puppy cut at 4 months since he looked like a ball of fur and I could no longer see his eye and I have been doing a puppy trim every 4 weeks but he looks like he was fluff dried after 2 weeks. So I tried a trim myself last weekend. I placed him on my kitchen cabinet and started to trim but he would not be still and I was worried I would scalp him and he would not stop trying to eat the hair even though I gave him favorite treats, so I expect him to pass a fur ball later this week. Finally I took him and the clippers outdoors and I was able to trim him a bit but a week later he now looks like he was fluffed. I have myself resigned that other than his hair he is not going to grow anymore:) |
